Box Score

GAME SUMMARY

The teams were scoreless early in the game, but Southwestern finished the first quarter with three touchdowns in the final five minutes to take command of the game.

Southwestern drove the field late in the quarter, but fumbled in the red zone, and it looked like the Tiger defense might come up with a turnover.  Instead, the Pirates recovered the fumble to take the early lead.

Two 14-yard touchdown passes in the final 2:14 of the quarter made it 21-0, capped by a four-play drive that ended with no time left on the clock.

Southwestern was held without a score until the final 1:15 of the half, but a short touchdown pass made it a 28-0 lead at the break.

The Pirates got a pair of scores in the third quarter to go up 42-0, then scored on a 71-yard catch-and-run in the final five minutes of the game, and finish off the scoring.

Trinity's best chance to score came at the end of the game, but the Tigers were not able to capitalize on first-and-goal from the four yard line in the final minute.

NOTABLES

The Tigers fell to 2-4 overall, and 0-2 in SCAC competition. The Pirates evened their overall mark to 3-3, and 2-0 in conference play. Trinity and Southwestern will meet again November 5 in Georgetown, Texas.

Saturday's game marked the first shutout loss for the Tigers since the 1994 season. Trinity lost to Washington & Jefferson (PA) College 28-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

The last regular season game that saw Trinity suffer a shutout loss was a 31-0 defeat at Austin College in 1993.

Today's loss snapped Trinity's six-game winning streak in the series, though the Tigers still lead the series 16-12-2 - dating back to 1909.  Southwestern resurrected the football program in 2013, meaning the last win for the Pirates in this series came in 1941.

Mitchell Globe led the game with 12 tackles for the Tigers, while Joshua Cook had eight tackles and a pair of pass breakups.

Tiger quarterbacks Davis King and Justin Ventura combined for 128 yards passing in the game, while wide receiver Cody Sandman led Trinity with four catches for 48 yards.

UP NEXT

Trinity continues its SCAC slate by traveling to Sherman, Texas, Saturday, October 22, for a game with Austin College. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
