Box Score San Antonio - Senior outfielder Jeremy Wolf smashed a game-winning home run with two outs in the 10th, to seal fourth-ranked Trinity baseball's 3-2 win over Our Lady of the Lake University on Tuesday night.
Wolf finished the game 4-5 with all three Tiger RBI to lead the offensive attack. He accounted for half of the team's eight total hits, adding a double and two singles to his clutch performance.
"He threw me a fast ball, then he threw me a slider, so I'd seen both of his pitches," said Wolf about the game-ending at-bat. "That last pitch, he was laughing on the mound for some reason, so I knew he was going to throw something soft. No way he was going to go back to a fast ball. I just stayed back as long as I could. I've been working on staying back, and not lunging forward when I swing. This is my mom's birthday, and I had to give her something good. She was at home watching. I told her I was going to give her something special, because I forgot to get her a gift."
The Saints opened the scoring in the second inning, followed by Wolf's RBI double to knot things up early. Our Lady of the Lake pulled back in front in the fifth, as the Tigers committed an error on an attempted pickoff play at third base.
In the bottom of the eighth, a leadoff walk was followed by a sacrifice and a bunt single to put two men on with one out. Following a strikeout, Wolf tied the game again with a line drive to left center.
Tiger first-years Ian Hussian and Sean Cubley threw all 10 innings on the night, and both were solid on the mound. Hussian went the first five innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits, and striking out a pair of batters. Cubley (1-0) earned the victory by throwing the final five innings, yielding just two hits, and recording six strikeouts. Cubley struck out back-to-back hitters in the ninth to strand two Saints players in scoring position, then struck out the side in the 10th to set up the dramatic finish.
"That was a great baseball game," Head Coach Tim Scannell said. "Our Lady of the Lake, we played them twice last year, and we felt they were the best team we had faced all year long. They came in this year no different. Very well coached, great arms. I think that's the type of baseball game everyone wants to sit down and watch. Our two freshman arms, Ian Hussian and Sean Cubley, pitched absolutely brilliantly. And, what can you say about Wolf, to step up and hit a foul home run, and then a fair home run on his mother's birthday? Pretty cool."
Trinity continues its six-game homestand Wednesday by hosting Baldwin Wallace (OH) University at 7:00 p.m.
