Box Score Blanco, Texas - After the first day of competition at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the Trinity women's golf team holds a two-stroke lead.
Only two of the five teams at the competition were able to finish the first round of play. The remainder of the opening round will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, followed by the second - and final - round of action.
The Tigers are 22-over par as a team, though they were not one of the five teams to finish today's round. Schreiner (TX) University is currently close behind in second place, followed by Southwestern (TX) University. Centenary (LA) College and Texas Lutheran University were the only teams to finish the first round, and stand in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
"It was a long day for everyone," said Head Coach Carla Spenkoch. "The conditions were tough, but I'm proud of how the girls are playing. We didn't quite finish the first round today, so we will hopefully finish tomorrow, and then play the second round."
All four Trinity players are in the top 11 individually so far, and Hanna Niner leads the team with a 4-over through 14 holes. She is also tied with two other players for the overall lead at the tournament. Shelby DeVore is only one stroke back in a tie for fourth, followed by Brigette Lee in a tie for seventh with her score of 6-over. Christine Campbell's 7-over par score has her in 10th place, followed closely by Taylor Moser in a tie for 11th at 8-over.
Trinity is led by Head Coach Carla Spenkoch, who began her tenure with the program in 1997. The Tigers won the conference title under her leadership in 2014, and have finished as runners-up on five other occasions - including last year.
