Kirby Smith Named AVCA Second Team All-American

Box Score

San Antonio - Trinity senior outside hitter Kirby Smith has been elected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III All-America Team for the second consecutive year.

Smith was tabbed for the All-America Second Team, and was a First Team selection in 2016. She also was selected for the AVCA All-West Region First Team for the second time in a row. Earlier, Smith became a three-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree. Smith has been elected to the All-SCAC First Team for the past two seasons, and was named to the Second Team in 2015.

Smith produced a team-leading 389 kills this season, and was second with 361 digs. She completed her collegiate career with 1,414 kills and is ranked seventh on Trinity's all-time list. Smith chalked up 1,271 digs during her time as a Trinity Tiger, and stands in a tie for 20th in the school's record books.

Led by 33rd-year Head Coach Julie Jenkins, fourth-ranked Trinity wrapped up the campaign with a 27-8 record. The Tigers posted six victories over nationally ranked teams, including a 3-2 decision over the #2 host Southwestern (TX) University in the SCAC Championship semifinals. Top-ranked Colorado College edged Trinity 3-2 in the SCAC Championship final at Georgetown, Texas.

The Tigers received an at-large bid to their 23rd NCAA Division III Tournament, but Pacific Lutheran (WA) University eliminated Trinity with a 3-1 win in the opening round in Georgetown.

Coach Jenkins reached two milestones during her coaching career. She made SCAC history by claiming her 300th conference victory, becoming the first coach - in any sport -  to accomplish that feat. Later in the season, Coach Jenkins earned the 900th overall win in her career, becoming the seventh coach - in any NCAA Division - to produce 900 victories.
