Box Score San Antonio – The 16th-ranked Trinity women's basketball team finished off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep with a 79-55 win at Southwestern (TX) University on Saturday.
GAME SUMMARY
Southwestern scored the game's first five points, but the Tigers tied the game 7-7 less than two minutes later. Trinity allowed just four more points over the final 7:46 of the period, outscoring the Pirates 20-4 to take command of the game.
The teams went back and forth early in the second quarter, but Trinity used a 10-1 run to make it a 36-18 advantage with just over two minutes until the half. The Tigers took a 37-20 lead into intermission.
After halftime, Trinity scored two quick buckets to push the lead over 20 points, but that was the largest of the third quarter. Southwestern whittled the lead down to 12 with 2:11 remaining, but the Tigers were able to push the lead back to 17 by the end of the period.
The Pirates hit their first shot of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to just 15 points, but the Tigers scored 14 of the next 15 points to put the game out of reach.
NOTABLES
Trinity improved to 11-2 overall and remained unbeaten at 4-0 in SCAC, while Southwestern fell to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in SCAC play.
Five of the Tiger players to appear in the game scored in double figures, led by Micah Weaver's 14 points in just 24 minutes of action.
Abby Holland added 13 points on 4-9 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line, while Emily Daniel came off the bench with 13 points of her own.
Mollie Hughes knocked down 5-10 shots for 12 points, tying for the team lead with seven rebounds. Holland and Rachel Chavez also had seven boards in the game.
Jordan Rudd chipped in with 10 points off the bench, adding three assists to tie Chavez for the team lead.
Trinity's defense forced 20 turnovers in the game, holding the Pirates to just 27.6% (16-58) shooting and a paltry 3-16 (18.8%) from three-point range.
