#5 Volleyball Splits With Concordia and UT-Dallas on Saturday

San Antonio - The fifth-ranked Tiger volleyball team split its final-day matches Saturday at the Trinity Fall Classic, defeating Concordia (TX) University and losing to the University of Texas-Dallas.

 

MATCH SUMMARIES

Trinity started the day with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 victory over Concordia, then the Tigers were edged 26-24, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 12-15 against UT-Dallas in the final match of the weekend.

The Tigers came out hot in the first set against Concordia, hitting .346 as a team and using a 6-0 scoring run to vault the team to a 1-0 lead. Trailing by one point late in the second, Trinity rallied to pull away late to take a 2-0 lead. Concordia closed to within four points late in the third set, but Trinity was able to hold on for the sweep to start off the day's action.

After falling behind 22-20 in the opening set against UT-Dallas, Trinity stole a win by claiming six of the next eight points. The Comets led most of the second set and even though Trinity clawed back to a 23-24 deficit late, the visitors held on to tie the match 1-1.

UT-Dallas carried that momentum into the third, taking a 22-16 lead late in the game. Trinity rallied to within three points, but UTD still managed to take its first lead with the win. 

The Tigers powered through the fourth set, taking a 22-14 lead that proved to be too much in the end, and the teams went to a fifth set to decide the winner.

UT-Dallas took an 11-6 lead, but Trinity closed the gap to just two (9-11) and then the teams traded points down the stretch. The Tigers fought off the first match point, but the Comets pulled off the upset.

 

NOTABLES

Trinity finished with a tournament record of 2-2, and now stands at 7-2 on the season. The Tigers claimed a win over the University of La Verne (CA) on Friday, and took defending NCAA Division III champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges to five sets.

Madeline McKay posted a double-double against UT-Dallas with 18 kills and 10 digs, and had 12 kills in the opener with Concordia, while hitting .375. McKay was elected to the All-Tournament Team.

Avery Tuggle had a double-double against UT-Dallas, recording 10 kills and 16 digs.

Katrina Lieberman contributed 30 assists against Concordia, and posted a double-double in the second match with 43 assists and 14 digs.

Jade Schoenberger hit .429 against Concordia and fired in 11 kills, while Sara Flynn made 10 kills against UT-Dallas.

Annie Rose Leggett led the UT-Dallas matchup with 19 digs.

 

UP NEXT

Trinity will compete next Friday and Saturday at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Divisional in Kerrville, Texas, beginning with a Friday evening matchup against Centenary (LA) College.
