#9 Tiger Volleyball Defeats Austin College in SCAC Opener

Denver, Colorado – Trinity's ninth-ranked volleyball team opened up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win over Austin (TX) College on Friday afternoon.

 

MATCH SUMMARY

The Tigers dropped the opening set 25-20, but stormed back to win 25-18, 25-15, and 25-20 in the next three.

The first set stayed close early in the first set, but the Roos broke a 10-10 tie by winning nine of the next 11 points and taking control of the match. That lead was up to 22-14 when Trinity made a late push with five unanswered points, but Austin College held on for the 1-0 lead.

The second set was tied on six different occasions, but Trinity never trailed on its way to tying the overall match. The Tigers used a 6-1 spurt to pull away with a 20-15 lead, then won five of the final seven points to close out the set.

An early 4-4 tie in set three was turned around quickly with six straight points by the Tigers. The lead was never less than five points after that, and Trinity rattled off the final four points to make it 2-1.

Trinity started the fourth set with a 9-3 run, but Austin battled back to a one-point deficit at 12-11. A Tiger timeout slowed the momentum and put Trinity in front 17-12. After a couple of Austin College points, Trinity scored six of the next seven to lead 23-15. Austin put together four unanswered to cut the deficit in half, but the Tigers finished off the win.

 

NOTABLES

Trinity improves to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in SCAC play this season with the win, while Austin falls to 5-10, 0-2 SCAC.

Lexie Acevedo and Avery Tuggle both scored double-doubles to lead the way for the Tigers. Tuggle finished with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Acevedo had 12 digs and 22 assists.

Annie Rose Leggett narrowly missed a double-double of her own, posting a team-leading 14 digs and nine kills.

Emily Ellis and Maggi Linker tied for the team lead with three blocks against Austin, as well as combining for 13 total kills.

Sarah Williammee led Trinity with 14 kills and hit .375 in the match, while Emily Ellis hit .545 and Emma Funk hit .600 for the Tigers.

Katrina Lieberman paced Trinity's offense with 26 assists, while Nadia Kern led the team with two service aces.

 

UP NEXT

The Tigers resume the weekend tournament tomorrow, facing off against Texas Lutheran University at 10:00 a.m. (MT) and hosting Johnson & Wales (CO) University at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
