Tiger Men Fall to St. Thomas in SCAC Weekend Opener

Houston, Texas – Trinity's men's basketball team opened up a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend on the road with a 104-72 loss at the University of St. Thomas (TX) on Friday night.

 

GAME SUMMARY

The Tigers kept pace with the home team for the first 10 minutes of the game, scoring nine straight points to take a 27-24 lead with 9:49 left in the half. The Celts immediately answered with a 16-2 run of their own and never looked back. Trinity got no closer than seven points the rest of the period, which ended with St. Thomas leading 60-43.

The second half began with St. Thomas scoring 24 of the first 30 points to reach its largest lead of the game at 35 points (84-49). Trinity scored 10 unanswered points to cut into the lead, but the Tigers got no closer than 25 points the rest of the way.

Trinity was held under 40% shooting for the game, while St. Thomas hit better than half of its field goals and 48.9% from three-point range. The Tigers did force 19 turnovers and record 10 steals in the game.

 

NOTABLES

Trinity falls to 7-11 overall and 5-6 in conference play this season, while St. Thomas is 18-1 overall and leads the league with an 11-1 SCAC mark.

The Tigers were swept by St. Thomas in two regular season meetings, after also losing at home to the Celts earlier this month.

Ben Canady led the way for Trinity with a career-high 16 points, connecting on 7-11 from the field. He also paced the team with three assists.

Jordan Lippman and Stephen Molina both came off the bench to score 13 points each and were the only other Tiger players to reach double figures. Both players also led the team with three steals each.

AJ Clark also came off the bench and pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds, while Ben Hanley finished with eight points and five boards.

The Tigers continue their road trip by facing off against Centenary (LA) College in Shreveport, Louisiana, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 2.
