#8 Women's Soccer Cruises to 3-0 Victory Over St. Thomas (Tex.)

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity UniversityWomen's Soccer team improves to 8-0-1 (2-0-0 SCAC) after posting their second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference shutout. The Tigers cruised to a 3-0 win over the Celts of St. Thomas (Tex.). The Celts drop to 1-7-2 (0-3-1 SCAC) after losing to Trinity.

Trinity played strong defense throughout the entire match and held St. Thomas to three total shots over the 90 minutes played. TU also took 16 corner-kicks on the day while the backline of Trinity held St. Thomas to zero corner kicks. Trinity was able to apply enough pressure to limit the Celts attacking opportunities but in the rare instance that St. Thomas did have a promising run, the Tigers sniffed it out.

The Rundown

After collecting her first assist of the season on Friday, sophomore Kyra Stafford (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian) netted her first goal of the season to give Trinity a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the match. Senior Kaity Ward (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier Prep) assisted Stafford's goal.

Junior Cassie Bowers (Lafayette, La. / Episcopal School of Acadiana) kept up her hot start to conference play after scoring two goals on Friday by scoring the second goal of the match in the 27th minute of the match. Bower's goal was assisted by junior Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood).

Sheridan scored the first goal of the second half in the ninth minute to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead over the Celts. Stafford was credited with the assist after making a beautiful pass just outside the box that led to Sheridan drilling her first goal of the day into the upper quadrant of the net.

Coach Speak
"First two conference games of the year and we leave with 2 wins and no goals allowed,"  Assistant Coach Spencer Valdespino began. "A great weekend filled with highlights but we still gotta find what our signature dish looks like. We enjoy what's on the plate but we're still waiting to be fully full. A solid week of training awaits us as we hit the road again next weekend."

Up Next

The Tigers will hit the road and play two more SCAC matches next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 8 Trinity will play Texas Lutheran at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 10 Trinity will conclude their two-game road trip with a matchup with Southwestern at noon.
