Brown, Jenkins Fuel Big Second Half, Push Tigers past McMurry, 90-74

Box Score

ABILENE, Texas - Trinity University Men's Basketball continued its successful run through in-region competition in the American Southwest Conference Saturday night with a statement 90-74 victory over McMurry University, concluding the brief two-game road trip weekend in Abilene.

The Tigers (3-0) again trailed into the intermission but left little room for drama as they shot nearly 62 percent from the floor, including eight-for-12 from beyond the arc, in the second half to drop 53 points on the Warhawks before they removed their collective foot off the pedal with a 26-point advantage with 3:45 to play on a 90-64 margin.

The second-half barrage was fuelled by an unbelievable spark-plug performance from sophomore guard Tanner Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) who collected his entire 18-point effort in a window of less than eight minutes including nine of Trinity's 12-2 run from 16 to 14 minutes left and a self-executed 9-0 run in less than 30 seconds before the under-8 media break.

Junior Kaleb Jenkins (New Orleans, La. / MP Country Day) finally broke through for his first double-digit and 20-point outing at 22 points, the second-highest total in his Trinity career to date. The reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year scored 13 of the Tigers' 37 first-half points to keep McMurry to a one-possession lead at the break and finished the contest in a tie for the team-high in both assists and rebounds as well.

The backcourt tandem also struck on the defensive end as they combined for six steals and two blocks, nearly half of both tallies, respectively. These efforts led to the Trinity tripling the Warhawks in transition with 30 fastbreak points to just 10 for Saturday's host.

Jenkins's team highs in rebounds (5) were tied by forwards senior David Nickell (Humble, Texas / Atascocita) and junior Enzo Sechi (Houston, Texas / Taylor) while the New Orleans-native's team-high assists tally (4) was tied by senior guards Ben Hanley (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) and AJ Clark (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson). The latter duo also combined for 18 points, nine apiece, on eight-of-16 shooting from the floor.

Coach Speak

"Another great second-half effort," Head Coach Jimmy Smith began. "The beauty of this team is that we have different guys step up each game. Our team has done a great job of finding the hot hand and letting them work. I thought our bench gave us phenomenal minutes tonight as well."

"I've made this trip to Abilene a lot of times in my life, so I know how hard it is to come away with two wins!"

Up Next
