Men's Hoops Remains Undefeated, Cruises Past Concordia, 95-82

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Trinity University Men's Basketball collected its fourth in-region victory in as many chances to open the 2021-22 campaign Saturday afternoon with a 95-82 tally against Concordia University (TX) on the campus of Southwestern University.

The Tigers (4-0) overcame their first slow start of the season by outscoring the Tornados 41-19 over the latter 15 minutes of the first half, then notched their largest lead of the afternoon of 28 points just past the midway point in the second half before taking the foot off the throttle.

Sophomore guard Ashton Owens (Trinity, Ala. / West Morgan) collected a career-high 15 points in the contest to share the game-high with junior forward Enzo Sechi (Houston, Texas / Taylor). The duo represented half of Trinity's double-digit scorers along with first-year guard Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) with 13 points, followed by senior forward David Nickell (Humble, Texas / Atascocita) with 10.

Trinity notched a 55.4 percent field goal percentage against the Tornados, the highest mark so far this season. Owens, Harvey and Nickell heavily contributed to the Tigers' advantage in bench points Saturday over Concordia, combining for 38 of the team's 54 points from the subs. As it has become routine, Trinity also noted a sizeable advantage in transition with 15 fastbreak points to just two for its opponent.

Thirteen of Sechi's 15 points on Saturday came in the first 20 minutes as he led the Tigers through their early deficit into the 17-point intermission margin while all of Owens's 15-point display came in the latter period to ice the contest.

Senior guard AJ Clark (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) once again led the clean-up efforts with six rebounds to go with a team-best four assists.

Coach Speak

"Very fast-paced game today," Head Coach Jimmy Smith began. "We had a lot of guys play well; I was really pleased with how well we shared the ball and I think that showed in our field goal percentage."

"This was a real quality win for us," Coach Smith continued. "Concordia is a well-coached team who just knocked off a Division I opponent [University of the Incarnate Word] on Tuesday."
