Sherman, Texas – Trinity's women's soccer team opened up its 2021 spring season with a 1-0 shutout win on the road against Austin (Texas) College on Saturday afternoon.
The Rundown
The Tigers held a definitive 29-3 edge in shots taken, which included 14 shots on goal. Austin College's only on-target shot came in the 10th minute and was promptly saved by goalkeeper Lauren Bolish (San Antonio, Texas / Alamo Heights). After allowing three shots in the first 10:15 of the game, Trinity's defense didn't allow another shot to the home team the rest of the way.
In the 28th minute, Cassie Bowers (Lafayette, La. / Episcopal School of Acadiana) had her shot saved by an Austin College defender to keep the game scoreless, but Bowers didn't keep it that way for long. Just shy of seven minutes later, Bowers dribbled through defenders and found the back of the net from 15 yards out for the eventual game-winner.
Trinity continued the pressure throughout the game, recording more than half (17) of the team's total shots in the second period. The Tigers also had eight on-target shots in the final 45 minutes of action.
Numbers to Note
Bolish earned her first career win in her first start, and her save was just the second in her career. She played the first half for the Tigers, while Joey Finley (Albuquerque, N.M. / Early College Academy) was in goal for the final period.
Bowers scored her fifth career goal overall and her second career game-winner, finishing with a total of three shots in the win today.
Coach Speak
"On a chilly, rainy, soggy day we had the chance to play a game," said Head Coach Dylan Harrison. "A game that in the past we might have taken for granted - or possibly even worse - wanted to just get it over with. However, after almost 500 days of not playing, it was exactly what our team and hearts needed. Cassie scored, our team shut them out, and we won; but most importantly, WE PLAYED. Thank you for everyone who has worked to make it happen, and it is our goal to show through our actions how grateful we are every time we step on the field."
