SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Women's Soccer dominated the pitch Monday night in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action against University of St. Thomas as it posted a 10-0 margin on the visitors from Houston.
Sophomore forward Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, MO / Kirkwood) opened the show with a pair of her eventual hat trick in the first 26 minutes before six other Tigers would find the back of the net in the second period.
Junior forward Kaity Ward (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) and first-year midfielder Tedi Del Prete (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian) each added a pair of scores and an assist in the commotion at McGinlay Field.
First-year keeper Joey Finley (Albuquerque, N.M. / Early College Academy) recorded her first career start and shutout victory as she maintained her post for the duration and deflected away St. Thomas's lone shot on goal.
Trinity Women's Soccer looks to keep the momentum rolling into Saturday as the Tigers welcome Texas Lutheran University to San Antonio for more SCAC competition.
The Rundown
Sheridan broke the opening deadlock in the 11th minute as she collected the first of junior midfielder/forward Alex Walsh's (Tulsa, Okla. / Booker T. Washington) three assists from the end line and punched it through at the six-yard box.
Just past the midway point in the first half, Sheridan was fouled inside the 18 and struck for her second goal via penalty kick, which gave the Tigers their eventual halftime advantage.
The Trinity offense erupted after the sun had set as the Tigers connected for eight second-half tallies. Del Prete opened the barrage in the 50th minute on a feed from Ward, then Ward went back-to-back between the 53rd and 56th minutes of play; both of Ward's scores came on Walsh's second and third assists.
Sheridan completed the hat trick in the 86th minute. In the meantime, the Tigers found additional scores from junior midfielder Cece Hendricks (Travelers Rest, SC / Saint Joseph's) and first-year defender Kyra Stafford (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian), making the Tiger advantage 8-0.
Del Prete found her second goal in the 88th minute as she fired the ball past the Celts' keeper off her own rebound. Sophomore midfielder/defender Emma Everts (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) capped the evening in the final seconds with a header from a well-placed corner kick by sophomore defender Nyah Shepherd (Deer Park, Texas / Deer Park South).
Notable Numbers
Monday's landslide victory produced an explosion atop the Trinity points leaderboard as Ward now has six goals on the season with a pair of assists with Sheridan tied with Ward at six scores.
Sheridan's hat trick landed her one goal shy of tying the Tigers' single-game record for goals, held in a tie between eight former Trinity players since the 1998 campaign.
Trinity has now secured 131 consecutive SCAC regular season victories.
Coach Speak
"A lot of college students spend time planning their perfect weekend, but our team is just different," Head Coach Dylan Harrison said. "You could tell by the smiles on their faces that a full day of classes followed by a game under the lights gets us excited. A lot of the things we had been working on came together. Garfield must have never had a Monday like this, because today was a great day."
