#9 Tiger Women Blank Howard Payne to Remain Undefeated

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's ninth-ranked women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 6-0 shutout win over Howard Payne University (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.

The Tiger win was just the second shutout of the season, limiting the visitors to just three total shots and only one on-target attempt. Trinity now stands 5-0-0 on the season after the win.

Five different players scored goals in the game, with Kaity Ward (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) netting the first two scores in the game.

The Rundown

As the game neared the 15-minute mark, Ward drove down the right side of the field and crossed the ball into the box for Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood). Sheridan turned and fired from in close, but the shot was saved and knocked around inside the box. Ward picked up the loose ball and drilled it into the net for a 1-0 lead at 15:04.

That proved to be the only score of the first half, despite a 16-shot onslaught from Trinity's offense. Howard Payne recorded seven saves in the period to keep the game close at halftime.

Trinity went to work quickly in the second half as Ward picked up her second goal less than six minutes into the period. Michaela Bosco (Weatherford, Texas / Weatherford) took the ball into the box on the left side then cut it back into the middle. It was deflected by a defender, but found the feet of Ward, who lifted it over the keeper's hands on her first touch.

Just over two minutes later, Sheridan put the game out of reach with a goal of her own, as Alex Walsh (Tulsa, Okla. / Booker T. Washington) provided the assist this time. Following a short goal kick, Walsh stepped in front of a pass by the HPU defense, quickly found Sheridan in the box, and Sheridan made it a 3-0 game in the 53rd minute.

In the 71st minute, Emma Everts (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) got in on the scoring as she slipped her shot under the sliding keeper to make it a 4-0 game. Tedi Del Prete (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian) lifted a pass to Everts just past the defense, and Everts was able to dribble into the box and score.

Maya Ozymy (Dallas, Texas / Coppell) netted her first career goal in the 75th minute on an assist from Meredith McAlester (Norman, Okla. / North). McAlester's long cross from the right side of the goal was deflected by Howard Payne's goalkeeper, but Ozymy was able to get her left foot on the loose ball for the score.

Ozymy then assisted on the final score of the game, finding Del Prete in the 85th minute. She turned past her defender and slipped a pass into the box for Del Prete, who turned the corner and fired in the shot from the corner of the six-yard box.

Numbers to Note

Ward leads the Tigers with four goals scored this season, including her first game-winner of the year in today's victory.

Sheridan trails Ward by just one goal on the year and the duo is tied with Bosco for the team lead with three assists each.

Everts, Del Prete, and Ozymy all scored their first goals of the season in today's win. Del Prete picked up her second assists of the year as well.

Coach Speak

"It may get old to others but having another all around team performance is what we do," said Assistant Coach Spencer Valdespino. "Our constant hunger drives us all. When we only get to eat once this week, we had to eat a little more but this six course meal will keep us full for only a few days. We'll use this upcoming week to prepare us for our first to-go meal of the season. "

Up Next

Trinity will make its first road trip of the season next weekend, facing off against both Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) and Farmingdale State University (N.J.). The weekend's action begins at 7:00 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, September 24, against Stevens.
