Ward Thrusts No. 7 Tigers Past Farmingdale State in OT, 2-1

Box Score

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The seventh-ranked Trinity University women's soccer team found its golden goal Sunday afternoon to land a 2-1 victory over Farmingdale State College to conclude its weekend trip to the New York metro area.

Senior midfielder Kaity Ward (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier Prep) secured said golden goal in the 97' with a strike from dead-center on the 18' that hooked into the lower-left corner of the net.

Junior forward Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood) scored Trinity's equalizer in the 22' which held for more than 70 minutes of action which led to the extra period. Sheridan also received an assist on Ward's strike as she collected an errant header from the midline in the Tigers' forward third and sprinted into the 18' to dump the ball in to first-year forward Michaela Bosco (Weatherford, Texas / Weatherford) who responded to the ensuing scramble in the box by finding Ward for the dagger.

First-year keeper Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview) notched her second career start and victory between the posts for Trinity as she commanded her position for the duration to pick up five saves and post a shutout performance for the final 92 minutes of action.

Sunday's contest was just the second time this season the Tigers (6-0-1) needed more than 90 minutes, the other on Friday night's draw against Stevens Institute of Technology.

Numbers to Note

Ward accounted for three of Farmingdale State's four saves in the contest as the two-time reigning SCAC Offensive Player of the Week peppered the Rams defensive line but could not get through until the extra period.

Senior midfielder Alex Walsh (Tulsa, Okla. / Washington) joined Sheridan and Bosco in the assist column Sunday as she fed Sheridan's 22nd-minute equalizer from almost the exact spot as Ward's gamewinner, splitting a trio of Farmingdale State defenders.

All three Tigers with an assist against the Rams entered the match tied for the team-high this season at three helpers apiece, a tie that remains atop Trinity's statsheet now at four assists each.

Coach Speak

"Even when things don't quite go our way, we don't get flustered and change our ways," said Assistant Coach Spencer Valdespino. "We don't ram heads into each other and lose our purpose. We stay hungry and finish our meal - even if it takes till closing time."

Up Next

No. 7 Trinity Women's Soccer returns to San Antonio next weekend to host its first two matchups in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Tigers battle Centenary College Friday night at 6 p.m. CT, then University of St. Thomas Sunday at Noon CT.
