Box Score SAN ANTONIO- Trinity University Men's Soccer opened up the fall season at home with a thrilling 5-2 victory over Occidental (CA) College. After falling beyond early, the Tigers scored four straight goals before Occidental added a late goal in the match.
The Rundown
Occidental struck first with a goal in the sixth minute of the game. OC had a strong offensive attack but Trinity adjusted shortly after the goal and settled in. In the 17th minute, Fraser Burns (Darly, Scotland / Garnock Academy) knotted up the score at one a piece thanks to an assist from Michael Messe (Williamsburg, VA / Jamestown).
After assisting on the first goal for the Tigers, Messe scored the first goal of his young career on a double assist from Jacob Galan (San Antonio, TX / Reagan) and Michael Pham (Richardson, TX / Plano East) to take a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute.
Trinity carried a 2-1 lead into halftime. After Galan was fouled in the penalty box, Jack Downes (Sheddield, England / Queens Ethelburas) stepped in to net a penalty kick which gave Trinity a 3-1 lead. Hunter Cain (Katy, TX / Cinco Ranch) scored his first goal in maroon and white to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
Occidental scored their second goal of the match in the 82nd minute. Shortly after, Michael Somerville (Ft. Worth, TX / Arlington Heights) scored a goal to help lift Trinity over Occidental by a score of 5-2.
By the Numbers
The Tigers took 10 shots on goal and scored five points in the first match of the season.
The Tiger defense only allowed three shots on goal from Occidental.
Two first years scored their first collegiate goals tonight.
