Trinity Men's Soccer Ties Colorado College to Clinch SCAC Regular Season Title

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity University Men's Soccer earned the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and the conference tournament's top seed with a scoreless tie with Colorado College on Friday night.

Juan Carlos Vidales (Laredo, Texas / IMG Academy) notched his third shutout of the season with three saves in the game – two of which came in a contentious second half.

Trinity also celebrated Senior Night for 14 Tiger seniors: Pieter Blank (The Hague, The Netherlands / Dalton Voorburg), Fraser Burns (Dalry, Scotland / Garnock Academy), Kyle Davis (Plano, Texas / Liberty), Jack Downes (Sheffield, England / Queen Ethelburgas), Philip Duenez (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens), Connor Jones (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce), Chris Nayler-Gress (London, England / Prosper), Michael Pham (Richardson, Texas / Plano East), JonConnor Rule (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson), Jake Simon (Menlo Park, Calif. / Atherton), Michael Somerville (Ft. Worth, Texas / Arlington Heights), Vidales, Colton Wilbur (Houston, Texas / Houston Christian), and Austin Wilman (Esher, England / Charterhouse School).

The Rundown

The Tigers took notes from the non-conference visit to the Colorado Tigers on September 17 as Trinity played strong defensively in the first 45 minutes, allowing just five shots with only one of which requiring the efforts of senior keeper Vidales.

The first quality chance came in the 34' on a Michael Somerville (Ft. Worth, Texas / Arlington Heights) give-and-go with Connor Jones (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) almost immediately after a near-platoon swap just past the 30-minute mark. Somerville also collected Trinity's other on-target attempt in the waning minutes of the first.

While the Texas Tigers were able to adjust to the first-half offense in Colorado Springs in September, the second-half physicality returned as the yellow card made five appearances in the latter 45 minutes. Both teams picked up six shots overall and two shots on goal in the second half.

Trinity's two on-target shots in the second half came in the final 15 minutes, but the goal didn't come for either offense.

Up Next

Trinity will compete as the top seed in the SCAC Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The tournament is hosted by Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and will begin on Friday November 4. The four-team tournament will feature two semifinals on Friday, followed by the SCAC Championship match on Sunday, November 6.
