Three First Half Goals Lead No. 7/8 Tigers to Shutout Win Over Texas Lutheran

Box Score

SEGUIN, Texas - The No. 7/8 Women's Soccer team improves to (11-0-1, 7-0-0 SCAC) after defeating Texas Lutheran University 3-0 to earn another weekend sweep. Junior defender Kyra Stafford (Albuquerque, N.M / Hope Christian) scored the first goal of the match and senior forward Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood) scored the following two goals.

Stafford wasted no time scoring her second goal of the season to put Trinity up 1-0 in the sixth minute of the match. Sheridan scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season in the first half to help the Tigers coast to a 3-0 victory. Sophomore keeper Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview) and junior goalkeeper Joey Finley (Albuquerque, N.M. / Early College) split time in goal and combined for the shutout win. The Tigers have now shut out seven straight opponents while outscoring their conference opponents 29-0.

The Rundown

The Tigers came out on the attack and earned a corner just a minute into the match. First-year defender Ilsa Newland (St. Louis, MO / Kirkwood) took the first shot of the afternoon but it was off target. A few moments later, Stafford called her own number and scored a goal to put the Tigers out in front.

Trinity continued to push the ball down the pitch and took a few shots before drawing a foul in the penalty box while attacking. Sheridan stepped up to nail the penalty kick and extend the Tiger lead to 2-0. It was not until the 21st minute that the Bulldogs were able to get a shot off but it was off frame. Sheridan later scored her second goal of the afternoon to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with just under three minutes of play left in the first half.

Texas Lutheran took one more shot before the half ended but it was not on target and the Tigers took a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Just five minutes into the second half, TLU put a shot on frame but Finley came up with the save to keep the shutout intact.

The Tigers took six more shots during the second half but could not find the back of the net. The Trinity defense continued to lock the TLU offense down as they were only able to settle for one more second-half shot that was off target.

Sheridan led the way with three shots, all of which were on goal.
