Men’s Basketball Regular Season in Full Swing for Holiday Break, Hosting Robinson Classic

SAN ANTONIO – No. 18 Trinity University Men's Basketball will battle Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas Wednesday, the first of three more consecutive matchups with American Southwest Conference foes. Trinity will host McMurry University Friday, Hardin-Simmons University Sunday in the 2022 Leslie Robinson Thanksgiving Classic.

The Tigers (3-1) returned Sunday from a victorious trip Georgetown, Texas for Southwestern University's Paul Peak Classic, defeating Hamilton College (NY), 92-76, and LeTourneau University, 88-84, in the Saturday-Sunday back-to-back slate.

For the weekend, sophomore guard Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) led the way averaging 20 points and 4.5 rebounds on 61.9 percent shooting from the floor, including career-high marks of 23 points and eight rebounds in the Sunday finale against LeTourneau.

No. 18 Men's Basketball is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off at Sul Ross Wednesday, followed by 2:00 p.m. tips in each game of the Leslie Robinson Thanksgiving Classic with McMurry on Friday afternoon and Hardin-Simmons on Sunday.

Preview: Sul Ross, Thanksgiving Weekend

Through four contests on the 2022-23 docket, four Tigers are averaging double-digits in the scoring column, led by Harvey's 14.8 points per game. Seniors Ben Hanley (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) and AJ Clark (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) fall in at 12.8 and 11.5 per contest, respectively, with junior Tanner Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) slotted between the veterans at 12.5, all shooting better than 46 percent from the floor.

Clark leads Trinity in multiple ball-control areas with 6.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.25 steals per game this season as well. Last season's lead facilitator, and holder of the third-best season total in assists in program history, Clark has put up at least five boards in all four contests and went for five or more assists twice.

Both Harvey and Brown are shooting above the 50-percent threshold from beyond the arc, 52.9 and 51.9 respectively, to start the season, accounting for just-under six of the Tigers' 8.5 made three-pointers per game.

On the Lobos: Sul Ross will be seeking its first victory of the 2022-23 campaign Wednesday in the matchup with the Tigers, having dropped three-straight road games to open the season at Texas Lutheran University, 85-66, at Whitworth University (WA), 73-60, and at Whitman College (WA), 78-63.

Last season, the Lobos visited for the Tigers' home-opener which ended in an 89-81 victory for Trinity. In his collegiate debut that day, Harvey posted 14 points off the bench in 16 minutes, matched by Brown who shot six-of-10 from the field.

Sul Ross is led offensively by Julian Paredes with 14 points per game thus far, deviating from the average by no more than two points in three contests. In last year's matchup, the forward produced 12 points in 29 minutes on the floor.

On the Warhawks: McMurry will also be seeking its first victory in Friday's Leslie Robinson Thanksgiving Classic-opener, having dropped three-straight matchups with Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foes, though all by five points or less between Schreiner University, 89-87, Texas Lutheran, 84-79 in overtime, both at home and at Austin College, 89-86.

Last season, the Warhawks hosted Trinity in a weekend trip to Abilene, Texas that also featured a matchup with Hardin-Simmons. The Tigers got the better of McMurry, 90-74, with 22 points from Kaleb Jenkins (New Orleans, La. / Metairie Park) and 18 more from Brown.

The Warhawks are led by 19.7 points per game from Remy Minor, who went over the 20-mark against Schreiner (21) and Austin (23) with the latter matchup including nine assists and 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Minor threw up a career-high 30 points in a battle with Southwestern the day before last season's matchup with Trinity, where he was held to just 10 points.

On the Cowboys: Hardin-Simmons stands at 1-2 so far in the 2022-23 campaign, looking to get back to .500 in a visit to Southwestern Friday before making the rest of the trek to San Antonio Sunday. The Cowboys opened the season with a 28-point rout against Texas Lutheran, but then dropped back-to-back eight-point margins to Schreiner and in the ASC-opener to University of Texas-Dallas, all at home.

In Trinity's visit to Hardin-Simmons last season, 16 points from Hanley and 10 rebounds from Clark aided the Tigers to a strong second-half resurgence for a 72-69 victory.

So far this season, Steven Quinn leads a trio in double-figures at 17.7 points per game including 24 against UT-Dallas, the most since posting his career-high of 31 points against East Texas Baptist University in January of last season.

On the Horizon…

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, No. 18 Trinity Men's Basketball will open up the 2022-23 SCAC regular season on the road with stops at Centenary College (Dec. 2) and University of St. Thomas (Dec. 4).

The Tigers return for four-straight at home surrounding in late December, hosting Geneva College (PA) and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the Leslie Robinson Christmas Classic (Dec. 21-22), then a return to the SCAC slate with Schreiner (Dec. 29) and Colorado College (Jan. 2).
