Tiger Men's Basketball Nets SCAC Home Win Over Schreiner

Box Score SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger men's basketball team resumed Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action with an 86-73 win over Schreiner University on Thursday night.

Trinity snagged its first SCAC win of the year, improving to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in conference. The victory is also the third straight for the Tigers. Schreiner falls to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) led the team in scoring with 21 points to go with six rebounds. Harvey hit 16-for-18 at the foul line, tying for the second-most free throws made in Trinity men's basketball history. His 16 made free throws are the most since Matt Jones hit 16 against Berry College in December of 2016.

AJ Clark (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) picked up 17 points total, hitting 11-of-12 at the free throw line. He matched Harvey with six rebounds and led Trinity with five assists. Jacob Millhouse (Plano, Texas / Independence) chipped in with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting that included a pair of three-pointers. Braxton Barry (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) led the team with seven rebounds, adding nine points off the bench. Zach Fenn (Covington, La. / Saint Paul's) had four steals to go with seven points in 17 minutes off the bench.

Trinity will return on Monday, January 2, with another SCAC contest against Colorado College at 4:00 p.m.

Coach Speak
"I'm so proud of this group," exclaimed Head Coach Jimmy Smith. "They continue to find ways to win. The guys did a great job executing the scout. Schreiner is a very good, well coached team."

The Rundown
Trinity got off to a quick start by scoring the first nine points of the game, then led by as many as 11 in the first period before Schreiner came to life. The Mountaineers turned an 18-7 deficit into their first lead of the game with a 14-2 run that finished with 9:15 remaining in the half.

Both teams traded leads after that until the Tigers scored eight of 10 points over a 91-second stretch that put the home team in front 36-30 with 3:28 remaining in the first period. Schreiner nailed a three to break up the momentum, but Trinity powered through and pushed the lead to eight points in the final minute. Schreiner stole an inbounds pass in the final seconds to get the final shot of the half, nailing a three-pointer to make it a 41-36 Tiger lead at the break.

The second half began with a pair of buckets by Schreiner to make it a one-point game, but Trinity never lost the lead in the second half. Leading 41-40, the Tigers used an 11-3 spurt to push the advantage to nine points with under 15 minutes to go in the game. Schreiner mounted another rally, though, and once again pulled within one at 57-56 with more than 10 minutes remaining.

Every time Trinity began to pull away, Schreiner came right back to keep the game within reach, and the Tigers were up just four points (70-66) with three minutes to play. Clark then opened a 6-0 run with a three-pointer that was followed by a pair of free throws on the next possession, and the Tigers took a 76-66 lead with under two minutes to go. Schreiner hit its next shot to drop the lead to single digits, but could get no closer as Trinity sealed the game at the free throw line.

Up Next
The Tigers will continue SCAC play on Monday, January 2, by hosting Colorado College at 4:00 p.m. It will be Trinity's first game of the 2023 calendar year, but the last home game until January 20.
