Box Score SAN ANTONIO – The 21st-ranked Tiger baseball team notched its seventh consecutive victory with a 12-6 win over Our Lady of the Lake University on Tuesday night.
Trinity improved to 17-7 with the win, while the Saints dropped to 18-19 this season. The Tigers have scored 10 or more runs in all seven games during the current winning streak.
A seven-run second inning sparked the offense to a 15-hit night that included five extra-base hits. MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) and Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) picked up three hits each in the game, while Schaub also scored four runs to lead the team.
Joel Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Horizon) got the starting nod on the mound for the Tigers, recording seven strikeouts before being relieved in the fifth. He scattered five hits over four-plus innings and allowed just one earned run. Jack Schmitt (St. Louis, Mo. / Lafayette) improved to 1-0 after earning the win in relief.
Trinity will be back on the field for a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series this weekend against the University of St. Thomas. The Tigers open with a single game on Friday night, followed by a Saturday doubleheader.
The Rundown
Trinity fell behind in the second after Our Lady of the Lake took advantage of two Tiger errors to score a pair of unearned runs to lead 2-0. The answer from the offense was immediate as Trinity hammered out seven runs on seven hits to take control of the game. Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) got the scoring started with a two-run single up the middle, then Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) hit an opposite-field home run to right on the next pitch to put Trinity in front for good, 4-2.
Evan McDonald (Pflugerville, Texas / Pflugerville) kept the inning going with a two-out double to send in another run, then Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) drove in McDonald for a 6-2 lead. Metz made the most of his second at-bat of the inning with a single through the right side to end the scoring for the second inning.
Schaub singled to lead off the third inning and came around to score on a single up the middle from Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) that made it an 8-2 Trinity lead.
A leadoff triple by OLLU in the fifth not only chased Thomas from the game, but also led to two runs for the Saints to make it an 8-4 deficit. The bottom of the inning saw Trinity score three more runs to push the lead to the largest of the game at 11-4. The Tigers had just one hit in the inning, taking advantage of three walks and three wild pitches. Pettit knocked in another run with his second hit of the game, then McDonald drew a walk with the bases loaded for the second run. A wild pitch sent in the final run of the inning.
Our Lady of the Lake got a solo homer in the sixth to get on the board again, but Montrezza drove in another run to keep the margin at seven runs. The Saints finished off the scoring with another run in the seventh, but could manage no more against Tiger relievers Cam Sheets (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and Jack Martinez (Corpus Christi, Texas / Ray). Sheets came on to finish the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth, then Martinez finished the game with three straight outs in the ninth.
