Trinity Men's Soccer Beats Dallas to Open SCAC Weekend

Story Links

SAN ANTONIO – The 25th-ranked Trinity men's soccer team began a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend at home with a 3-0 win over the University of Dallas on Friday night.

The Tigers (7-1-2, 2-1-0) were in control of the match from start to finish and held the Crusaders (1-7-2, 0-2-0) to just two second-half shots – only one of which was on goal. Trinity had possession for two-thirds of the game overall, piling up 23 total shots and holding a decisive 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Trinity was on the attack early on, picking up four shots in less than 10 minutes of play to immediately put the visitors on their heels. Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) picked up a couple of on-target shots during that stretch, but the game remained scoreless until the 15th minute.

Joseph Kuri (San Antonio, Texas / TMI Episcopal) broke up the shutout with his goal at 14:15 that was eventually the game-winner. The initial attack came from the left side of the field, then the ensuing cross from the back post was cleared away temporarily by the Dallas defense. Jack Downes (Sheffield, England / Queen Ethelburgas) picked up the loose ball from about 30 yards out and found Kuri near the penalty spot for the finish and the 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Trinity won a corner that proved to be another goal-scoring opportunity, resulting in a 2-0 lead. Jack Eubank (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham Broughton) swung the ball in with his left foot to the near post, and fellow defender Pieter Blank (The Hague, The Netherlands / Dalton Voorburg) nodded it home for the score in the 22nd minute. The Tigers had several more shots to close out the opening period, but the score remained 2-0 at the half.

Goalkeeper Austin Wilman (Esher, England / Charterhouse School) got the victory in goal for Trinity after playing a clean first half, leading a defense that didn't allow a shot in the opening period.
The second half got started quickly as Braden Shuey (Frisco, Texas / Wakeland) netted a goal in the 52nd minute to give the Tigers the 3-0 lead. The goal came on another corner kick that was swung in once again by Eubank. The ball deflected off of a Blank and a Dallas defender and into the air about five yards from goal. Shuey rose up and headed it home over the keeper's hand to account for what proved to be the final score of the night.
