SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Men's Basketball took a "W" to open their home stand with a 91-84 victory over Concordia University (TX).
Senior
Tanner Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) set a new career high with 27 points on 10-16 shooting.
Christian Green also put in another excellent performance, collecting 16 points and 8 boards. Another double-digit point performance was put in by
Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) as he put in 15 points for the Tigers.
The Rundown
The Tigers got a slow start, taking a minute and a half to get their night going. However, their first basket was electric and was a foreshadowing of things to come. Brown would take a pass from Green and swish a shot from behind the arc.
Abdullah Roberts (Houston, Texas / Homeschool Christian Youth Academy) and
Dean Balo (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) would put in back-to-back baskets to extend the Tiger lead to four. The Tigers and Tornadoes would trade buckets for the next few minutes until two good free throws by the Tornadoes would make the game a one-possession ordeal. The Tigers would gain some slight momentum when Green would send a Tornado shot into the stands and the Tiger bench would lose their minds. The Tornadoes grabbed their first lead of the game since the early minutes on a quick layup and the score would be 30-32. However, the Tigers would grab the lead right back when Brown ripped the ball out of the Tornado's hands and laid it off the glass with delicacy to give the Tigers the lead, 34-32. The Tornadoes would snag the lead back but the Tigers closed out the first half with six points, capped off by a and-one by Harvey and he would flex on the Concordia defender. The Tigers would take a lead into the half, 46-42.
The scoring would get started with
Braxton Barry (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) driving in on a Tornado defender and hitting an easy layup off of a strong power dribble. Green would take over by putting in an easy four points to extend the Tiger lead to 8. However, the Tornadoes would catch fire and hit back to back to back threes followed by a layup to take what felt like a commanding 64-63 lead. With all the momentum would get more buckets and grow their lead 74-67. A crucial time-out placed by Head Coach
Jimmy Smith would allow the Tigers to catch their breath and settle in. Then, it was time for
Tanner Brown to take over. Out of the timeout, Brown hit a huge corner three that swung ole' Mo to the Tigers. Brown would then take a missed shot from the Tornadoes down the floor and put in a contested, acrobatic layup to cut the lead to within two. The Tornadoes held a firm two point-lead after trading a few baskets. However,
Dean Balo would find Harvey on the wing and Harvey would hold his follow-through and look to his bench because he knew that three-pointer was going in. The Tigers would take the lead, 80-78. The Tigers hit the gas pedal. Brown would drive into the lane and have a soft touch at the rim, even in contact, putting another and-one into the Tiger stat book. Again, the Tiger ball movement would find the open hands of Harvey who would splash a huge three from the wing to bring the score to 86-80. Those two shots lit up the fans in Calgaard Gym and put a dagger in the Tornado hopes. With 50 seconds left, Harvey stuck his foot in the ground, looking to go to the hole. Harvey would keep his eyes up to find a cutting
Christian Green who would take the easy layup and give the Tigers a 90-83 lead. The Tigers would stop any hope of a comeback when
Jacob Millhouse (Plano, Texas / Independence) would jump out of the gym to block a potential Tornado three and the Tigers would take possession and run out the clock to take the win 91-84.
