Tiger Men's Basketball Starts Conference Play Against Southwestern and TLU

Trinity University Men's Basketball gets their conference play started this weekend with a pair of road games against Southwestern and Texas Lutheran

The Tigers (5-0) tore through their first home stand of the season. The Tigers picked up wins against Concordia (TX), Hardin-Simmons, and Mary Hardin-Baylor. During their games, the Tigers outscored their opponents 256-210. Freshman Christian Green (San Antonio, Texas / Veterans Memorial) had a standout weekend that included a total of 53 points scored. His best performance was in the game against UMHB where he had 20 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) collected 50 points on the weekend while shooting 44 percent from behind the arc.

D3hoops.com Rankings

For week 1, the Tigers are receiving votes to crack the top 25 for the first time this season. Sitting in the top spot is Wisconsin-Whitewater with Hampden-Sydney occupying the second spot. Region rival Mary Hardin-Baylor is receiving votes as well as SCAC rival St. Thomas.

Preview - Conference Opener

The Tigers will travel to Georgetown to take on the Southwestern Pirates on Friday, December 1st at 5:30 PM. Then the Tigers will head to Seguin to play against Texas Lutheran on Saturday, December 2nd at 4:00 PM.

On the Southwestern Pirates: The Pirates have had a tough time early this season, holding an 0-7 record heading into the first round of conference play. They have unfortunately lost some close games this season, including a 111-113 loss to Howard Payne in Brownwood. The Pirates are shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 25 percent from three. The Pirates are led by junior forward Brock Luechtefeld. Luechtefeld is averaging 14.9 points per game so far this season and is shooting 60.6 from the field. Look for him to match up against Braxton Barry (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) down low. All-time, the Tigers are 48-20 against the Pirates and are 21-11 when playing in Georgetown.

On the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs: The Bulldogs are 1-6 so far this season. The Bulldogs collected their lone win against UMHB by a score of 78-77. The Bulldogs have dropped games to Concordia and Hardin-Simmons as well, teams that have been defeated by the Tigers. The Bulldogs are led by a pair of guards averaging 13 points per game this season. The Bulldogs have struggled from behind the arc so far, so look for the Tigers to stay in the zone to force long-range shots.

Key To The Game

Force Bad Shots: With the Tiger zone making it tough for teams to get into the paint, they will have to rely on making points from behind the arc. Against UMHB, the Tigers forced multiple shots from way behind the three-point line that had a low-make probability. Look for the Tigers to try to force more three-point shots from these shooting-struggling teams.

Looking Ahead - Conference, but At Home

The Tigers will play their first home conference games against Austin College and the University of Dallas on December 15th and 16th.
