HOUSTON – The Tiger men's soccer team fell short in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship game for the third straight year against the University of St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon, as Trinity was defeated 3-2 in a penalty-kick shootout.
Trinity drops to 10-2-3 this season with today's result, which goes down as a draw. St. Thomas is 12-3-2 and will receive the SCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs, which will be announced at the Selection Show tomorrow afternoon.
Both teams played outstanding on the defensive end as there were just 16 combined shots allowed over 110 minutes of play.
Austin Wilman (Esher, England / Charterhouse School) had three saves and faced the only on-target shots in the entire game, recording his third clean sheet of the season. The shutout is also the fifth of the year for the Tigers.
After neither team scored in regulation, the game advanced to overtime, which consisted of two 10-minute overtime periods. The game remained a tie after the overtime periods, leaving the conference championship to be decided by the penalty kick shootout.
Trinity missed its first PK to fall behind early and St. Thomas made each of its first three kicks. The Tigers rallied with two makes in the next two tries to make it a 3-2 score. The Celts missed to keep Trinity's hopes alive, but the next Tiger kick was saved and the shootout was over.
