Volleyball Fever: No. 13 Tiger Volleyball's Quest For SCAC Glory

No. 13 Tiger Volleyball will take a trip to Georgetown to compete for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship this weekend.

The Tigers (26-4) swept the final regular season match against Schreiner. The Tigers showed their dominance, not allowing the Mountaineers to get to 20 points in any set. The Tigers held the Mountaineers to an abysmal .107 hitting percentage for the match. The Tigers were led by Mackenzie Logan (Calgary, Canada / Bishop Carroll), who had 13 kills on a .458 clip. Fifth-year Brette Thornton (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) also had an outstanding match, collecting nine kills and two service aces. The Tigers had a huge win to build momentum to go into championship weekend.

AVCA Rankings - Tigers Stay at 13

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) ranks the Tigers at 13th nationally. The top two spots remain the same, with Juniata sitting firmly at number one. Region rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sits in the 8th spot and SCAC rival Colorado College is receiving votes.

SCAC Player of the Week - Mackenzie Logan, Offensive

Senior Mackenzie Logan has been selected as the SCAC Offensive Player of the Week. This marks Logan's third selection for player of the week this season.

From the SCAC press release:

Logan led the 13th-ranked Tigers with 13 kills and a .458 hitting percentage in the team's lone match last week, a 3-0 sweep of Schreiner in the regular season finale. Logan also had six digs and tallied a team-best 13.5 points in the match.

Preview - SCAC Tournament

Being the top seed, the Tigers will have a first-round bye. The Tigers will face off against the winner of the Schreiner versus St. Thomas Match. Either way, the Tiger semi-final match will get underway on Friday, November 10th at 3:30 PM.

On the Schreiner Mountaineers: The Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 19-12 (8-8 SCAC) record and clinched a tournament spot for the first time since 2020. In their last tournament appearance, the Mountaineers matched up against the Tigers and were swept. Freshman Giannia Hillard had more success against the Tigers in the most recent match notching 7 kills, but it was not enough. With the win, the Tigers are now 28-0 all-time against the Mountaineers.

On the St. Thomas Celts: The Celts closed off the season with a 17-11 (9-7) record. The Celts have made the tournament for the fourth year in a row, but the Celts have never made it past the first round of play. During the most recent match-up between the two schools, the Tigers defeated the Celts 3-1. The Tigers will need to stop outside hitter Audrey Cataline, who gave the Tigers some measure of trouble last match with 15 kills. Overall, the Tigers are 11-0 against the Celts since 2015.

Keys To The Game

Domination In the Middle: For the tournament, the Tigers will look to get middle blockers Thornton Maddie Fate (Croton on Harmon, New York / Croton Harmon) going early. On the year, both middles are hitting over .350 with Fate hitting .398 and Thornton hitting .376. Thornton is ranked 18th nationally while Fate is ranked 8th. Look for the Tigers to give them more opportunities to be a nice offensive complement to Logan on the outside.

Looking Ahead - NCAA Regionals

Should the Tigers win the SCAC Tournament, they will earn an automatic bid to compete at the NCAA III Regionals from November 16th through November 18th. Trinity could also get in with an at-large bid should they fall short. The full field will be announced at the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, November 13, at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
