Story Links

SAN ANTONIO – The 22nd-ranked Trinity men's basketball team opened up its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference home schedule with an 89-54 win over Austin College on Friday night.

The Tigers remain undefeated at 8-0 this season, improving the team's conference record to 3-0 on the year. The Kangaroos dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in SCAC this year. Trinity has also won eight consecutive meetings between the two schools, dating back to the 2019-20 season.

The Tigers had 16 different players see action in the game, with Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) and Dean Balo (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) leading the way with 13 points each. Harvey connected on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Balo went 5-for-7 off the bench.

Tanner Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis), Carter Ruck (Southlake, Texas / Carroll), and Zach Fenn (Covington, La. / Saint Paul's) added 10 points each for Trinity. Brown just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to lead the team, and Fenn also added four steals and three assists to his stat line.

Trinity never trailed in the game, opening up the first half of play with a 15-2 run over the first seven-plus minutes. Austin cut the lead to just seven by the midway point of the period, but the Tigers scored nine of the next 11 points to push the lead back to double digits at 25-11 with 7:20 remaining. The lead never dipped below 10 the rest of the game, and a 9-0 Tiger run late in the first half pushed the lead to 19 points with under two left.

The Tigers led 36-21 at the break and it took just over three minutes for the lead to swell to 24 points in the second half. The lead stayed about the same for the next several minutes, then Trinity put the game out of reach for good with 14 straight points to make it at 67-28 game with just under 10 minutes left.

Coach Speak
"Great team effort all across the board," said Head Coach Jimmy Smith. "I thought the quality of our depth was really on display tonight, with everyone making positive contributions. Rebounding was the number one key for us tonight and the guys did a great job on the glass."
