#10 Women's Basketball Soars Past Austin College

SAN ANTONIO – The 10th-ranked Tiger women's basketball team got its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend at home with a 92-50 win over Austin College on Friday night.

Trinity improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Austin dropped to 2-7 this season with a 1-2 mark in SCAC. The Tigers earned their eighth consecutive meeting against the Kangaroos, as well as two straight wins by 40-plus points in this series.

There were five Trinity players in double figures among the 12 Tigers to see action in tonight's game, led by Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Ore. / Valley Catholic) and her 22-point night in just 21 minutes on the court. She hit 8-of-13 from the field – including all four three-point attempts and both foul shots. Napoli also led the team with seven assists to go along with four steals and four rebounds.

Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) connected on all five of her field goals on her way to a 13-point game, dishing out five assists in just 17 minutes of action. Maddie Mueller (Houston, Texas / Concordia Lutheran) matched her backcourt mate with 13 points to lead the Tiger bench scorers.

Natalie Anderson (San Jose, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty) finished with 11 points and a team-best six boards, while Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) hit 3-for-7 from distance en route to an 11-point night that also included three steals and three assists. Ivory Scott (Waco, Texas / Waco) tied Napoli for the team lead with four steals.

Trinity forced 40 turnovers in the game, while also limiting Austin College to just 13.6% (3-for-22) shooting from three-point range. The 40 turnovers led to 45 of the 92 Tiger points that also included 24 fastbreak points.

The Tigers led wire-to-wire in this game, beginning with an 8-2 spurt that was finished off by back-to-back layups from Anderson. The 'Roos dropped in a basket in the final minute of the quarter to keep the lead at six, but Minter drained a three in the final seconds to make it a 19-10 Tiger lead after one. The slow start for Austin got worse in the second quarter as Trinity held the visitors to just eight points. The lead reached 20 for the first time on another three from Napoli and the second quarter ended with Trinity leading 43-18.

The third quarter saw Austin nearly double its point total with 15 points over the 10-minute period. The Tigers more than matched the intensity, though, producing their best offensive quarter of the game with a 29-point outburst. The period began with a 13-3 Tiger run that took the 25-point margin to 35 (56-21) in a little more than three minutes. Just over a minute later, Napoli scored seven straight Trinity points and assisted on a three-pointer that made it a 66-23 game with 4:23 still to go in the third. The 39-point lead heading into the fourth quarter went as high as 44 late in the game, but Austin never got closer than its 25-point halftime deficit the rest of the game.

Coach Speak
"Finals week always reminds me of the journey Happy Gilmore takes throughout his evolution from hockey player to golf champion," said Head Coach Cameron Hill. "We handle finals like Happy handled Bob Barker, but thankfully, we always seem to find our happy place once we get to play games again! Like Chubbs said in his white tux playing the piano with BOTH HANDS, we've only just begun! Onward!"

Up Next
The Tigers will conclude their SCAC weekend with a matchup against the University of Dallas at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
