ABILENE, Texas - Trinity University Softball opened the 2023 season on the wrong end of a road doubleheader at McMurry University Friday night.
The Tigers (0-2) collected quality performances in the circle from first-year
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) and senior
Emery Boettcher (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) as they combined to allow just six hits through 10 innings of work. Arce's collegiate debut in the second contest netted a complete game with just two hits and an unearned run on her record while the Warhawks snuck in a two-out triple in the fifth to tally just the second run on Boettcher's line.
Junior
Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) plated the first run of the day for either squad as she dropped a single to center field to score sophomore
Jayla Arenas (Houston, Texas / Dobie) in the third inning of game one.
Sophomore
Lanie Smith (Foxfield, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) led the way in the Trinity lineup with three hits through six plate appearances, one of four Tigers to collect multiple base hits alongside Delaluna, senior
Madison Horn (Schertz, Texas / Clemens) and sophomore
Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real).
After back-to-back one-run innings for McMurry, the Tigers called upon junior
Brooke Porter (Carmel, Ind. / Heritage) for her first appearance since the 2021 campaign after missing the 2022 season due to injury. The Hoosier quieted the Warhawks for just one hit allowed over her two relief innings to close game one.
Trinity Softball remains in Abilene overnight to battle a second American Southwest Conference foe, Hardin-Simmons University, for a noon doubleheader. The Tigers remain on the road until February 26 where they will host Babson College (MA) for their 2023 home-opener.
