Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 4/4 Women’s Basketball Rolls by Austin, 84-40

Another 18 from the bench for Shipley, Putnam collects second double-double of the season as Tigers cruise to the halfway point of its four-game homestand

SAN ANTONIO – No. 4/4 Trinity University Women's Basketball rode away for an 84-40 knockout of Austin College Saturday night in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Tigers (22-1, 13-1 SCAC) were led by senior Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) with 18 points, her seventh outing in SCAC action of double-digits off the bench.

Senior Addie Putnam (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Xavier) checked in next with 14 points and her second double-double of the season through 10 rebounds. Junior Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) rounds out the double-digit Tigers with 10 points, added four assists and joined senior Claire Hale (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) as co-leaders with four steals apiece.

Trinity put up its largest advantage with nearly 12 minutes to go, 73-18, on Shipley's final basket of the night. The Tigers allowed seven or fewer points in each of the first three quarters, simultaneously putting up 21 or more on the other end.

No. 4/4 Trinity Women's Basketball will remain in San Antonio for its final regular-season weekend, February 17-18, to host Texas Lutheran University and Southwestern University. The Saturday matchup with the Pirates will be Senior Day.

The Rundown
Putnam got right to work Saturday night as she poured in nine of her 14 points in the first six minutes, six of which helped to power an 11-0 run before the first media stoppage. Immediately after the Kangaroos finally broke the seal, Putnam returned fire on the other side of the timeout with a three-pointer that pushed 11-0 to 18-2 over the first seven minutes.

Shipley took over the scoring in the second quarter and overtook Putnam as the first Tiger in double-digits, tallying 11 points in the second 10 minutes. Putnam immediately went to work on the glass in the second with four of her 10 rebounds. Shipley's second-to-last basket in the quarter logged the first 30-point lead, 44-13 with over a minute before the half.

Six Tigers went into halftime with a pair of steals, scoring 26 points from Austin turnovers, up against just three turnovers for Trinity through 20 minutes.

Putnam broke back into the scoring column as the second in double-figures with 6:38 remaining in the third to post the first 40-point spread, 55-14, then immediately got back to the glass with an offensive rebound which set up Robbins to reach double-figures on the next possession. Shipley's final points of the evening posted the largest Trinity lead, 73-18, with 11:56 left in the contest.

As the clock wound down, Putnam posted another four rebounds in the fourth quarter to reach her second double-double of the season. The senior finished the game with four of Trinity's overwhelming 18 offensive rebounds, the 11th time this season the Tigers reached or exceeded that mark.

Coach Speak
"According to Ted Lasso, the goldfish has the shortest memory of any living species," Head Coach Cameron Hill began, "and they are always happy. I feel like we approached this weekend like goldfish."

"Since we don't actually have the capacity to remember anything, we just played like today was the most important day," Hill continued, "and each game was the most important game. I actually believe this, witty sit-com references aside."

"If we consider the results, and overall 106-point differential, I would say, 'thanks Ted, we are goldfish.'"
