No. 3/5 Tigers Defeat No. 4 Birmingham-Southern in Sunday's Series Finale

SAN ANTONIO – The No. 3/5 Trinity baseball team finished off a weekend series against fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern College with a 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers avoided a series sweep with the win, as the Panthers won 3-0 Friday night and 7-6 in a 10-inning game on Saturday. This weekend marked the first games of the season for both teams, which also met three times last year.

Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson), a sophomore transfer who played at Texas A&M University-Kingsville last year, salvaged the series with a strong performance on the mound on Sunday. Teer allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings of work, striking out four batters without yielding a walk.

Trinity took the early lead with all six runs scored in the first two innings and never looked back. The big blow came in the second inning as Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) launched a three-run homer to right field. It was the second round-tripper in the past two games for the sophomore catcher, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in today's game.

The Tigers will be back in action next weekend, hosting Hardin-Simmons University for another three-game series that starts on Saturday, February 18.

The Rundown
After slow starts in each of the first two games, Trinity's offense got going early with three hits in the first four batters, taking a 1-0 lead on a hit by Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial). After Birmingham-Southern finally got an out, the Tigers then drew three consecutive walks – two of which came with the bases loaded. Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) and Hunter Nevilles (Corpus Christi, Texas / Calallen) drove in the final two runs of the inning after seeing just one strike between the two of them.

The Tigers started the second with two more walks to chase the Birmingham-Southern starting pitcher from the game. That's when Lazzara deposited the second pitch he saw over the wall in right field to make it a 6-0 Trinity lead.

The Panthers got on the board in the third with an infield single and a heads-up baserunning play. The play began as BSC beat out a slow grounder to second for a base hit. The runner at second took off on contact and never let up, heading home and beating the throw from first to make it a 6-1 game.

That wound up being the only run of the game charged against Teer, as he threw four more shutout innings after that. In fact, Teer only gave up two more hits over his final four innings and both runners were erased on inning-ending double plays.

Jonathan Newman (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) came on in relief in the eighth and finished with a pair of strikeouts, though he did allow a run in the ninth. Michael Boeke (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) finished off the final two outs for the Tiger pitching staff, getting two quick outs to strand two runners on base and end the game.

Up Next
Trinity resumes its long season-opening home stand next weekend, hosting Hardin-Simmons for a three-game series that begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 18, at noon. The two teams will finish the series on Sunday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
