SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's men's basketball team opened up the final weekend of the regular season with a convincing 85-58 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Texas Lutheran University on Friday night.
The win keeps the Tigers (18-6, 11-4) in second place in the SCAC standings, while Texas Lutheran (10-14, 5-10) suffered its seventh consecutive loss. Trinity led virtually the entire game and overwhelmed the visitors with a 42-12 scoring advantage in the paint.
Kaleb Jenkins (New Orleans, La. / Metairie Park) and
Ty Williams (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) tied for the team lead with 11 points each off the bench, accounting for nearly half of Trinity's bench scoring for the night. Williams hit 5-for-5 free throws and grabbed four rebounds in 16 minutes, while Jenkins knocked down 5-of-8 from the field and recorded a team-best three steals in 17 minutes.
AJ Clark (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) was Trinity's only other player to reach double figures – most of which came in his perfect 6-for-6 night at the foul line. He also led the team with six boards and three assists.
Tanner Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) and
Jacob Millhouse (Plano, Texas / Independence) chipped in with nine points each in limited minutes.
Trinity plays host to Southwestern tomorrow night and will celebrate Senior Day with four Tiger players. Jenkins and Clark will be joined by
Ben Hanley (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) and
Griffin Levine (Dallas, Texas / Yavneh) for the pre-game recognition.
The Rundown
The teams traded small leads early in the game, but Trinity blitzed the visitors with 17 straight points to take a 24-8 lead with just over 10 minutes gone in the first half. That lead grew as high as 22 points with just over three minutes left before halftime. The Bulldogs did finish by scoring eight of the final nine points in the period, but Trinity still held a comfortable 37-22 lead.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 12 early in the second half, but a 10-0 Tiger run essentially put the game away for good. Trinity led 51-29 with just over 14 minutes left at that point, and Texas Lutheran never got closer than 18 points the rest of the game. Trinity's lead swelled as high as 34 points in the final minutes as the Tigers shot 50% from the field over the final period.
