No. 5 Baseball Falls to Babson in Series Finale on Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – The fifth-ranked Tiger baseball team finished off a three-game weekend series against Babson with an 11-6 loss on Sunday afternoon.

Trinity swept the series-opening doubleheader yesterday, winning 6-1 and 3-2 to clinch the series. The Tigers fell to 5-4 on the season with today's result, while Babson is 1-2 to start off the 2023 season.

Babson took a 6-1 lead after two innings on the weekend finale and Trinity was never able to get back into the game, despite three home runs among the offense's six extra-base hits. The Tiger defense also committed five errors in the game, leading to six unearned runs.

Brandon Nelson (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) went 2-for-4 with two home runs in the game, scoring twice and collecting three RBI to pace Trinity's offensive efforts. Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) also had a pair of hits for the Tigers, while Ezra Gore (McKinney, Texas / North) came around to score twice, and Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) had a solo home run for his only hit of the day.

Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) suffered the loss and dropped to 2-1 on the season. Teer allowed eight runs on seven hits over four innings to start the game, though just three of the runs he allowed were earned. Trinity pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters in the game, yielding just two walks. Jack Martinez (Corpus Christi, Texas / Ray) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game, recording four strikeouts and only giving up one hit.

The Rundown
Babson opened the game with a leadoff single that turned into a run and a 1-0 lead, but Nelson's first homer of the day came in the bottom of the first as an answer. He gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead after Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) kept the inning going with a two-out double.

The Beavers put together five runs on four hits in the second inning, taking advantage of two Trinity miscues on defense that led to all five runs being unearned.

After the Tigers stranded a couple of runners that reached on walks in the third, Babson made them pay with two more runs on a two-out home run that made it an 8-2 lead. Gore scored after being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 8-3.

The Beavers added two more runs with two outs in the seventh to take a 10-3 lead. Harris homered with one out in the bottom half of the inning to bring it back to 10-4, but the Tigers once again failed to put up a big inning to get back into the game.

Babson scored again in the eighth for its final runs of the day, and Trinity got a pair in the bottom of the inning with three hits. Nelson hit his second roundtripper of the day to start the scoring, then Gore and Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) hit back-to-back doubles to bring in another run. That turned out to be the final tally, though, and Babson was able to leave on a high note with the win.
