SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger softball team made its 2023 home season debut on Sunday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader against No. 20 Babson College.
Trinity fell to 1-11 on the season with the losses, while Babson even its record to 3-3 with the wins. The Tigers and Beavers battled through a one-run game until the final inning of game one, as Babson poured in five insurance runs to take a 6-0 victory. All the scoring in game two came in the first two innings as Babson scored the first three runs and Trinity got on the board in the bottom of the second. Both teams had plenty of runners on base after that, but neither managed to score again in the 3-1 decision.
Emery Boettcher (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) pitched three shutout innings to start and the only run of the game through six innings came by way of a solo homer in the fourth. Babson plated five runs in the top of the seventh, though just four of the runs were earned. Trinity finished the first game with six hits, and left runners on base in every inning except the sixth.
Jessie Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) finished 2-for-2 with two walks in the first game, including the team's first triple of the season.
Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) also had a pair of hits as the two players accounted for four of the team's total of six.
Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) was the lone Tiger player with two hits in the second game, finishing her day with a total of three hits in the doubleheader. She also came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, Calif. / Freedom) in the second inning.
Trinity issued eight walks in the first two innings and was fortunate to be down just 3-0 before Baltzell's RBI in the bottom of the second.
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) was charged with the loss for the Tigers. Relievers
Brooke Porter (Carmel, Ind. / Heritage Christian) and
Bella Gutierrez (Devine, Texas / Devine) pitched 5.2 shutout innings to close out the game, allowing just three total hits.
