Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 1/2 Trinity's Winning Streak Snapped by Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 1/2 Trinity women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in Sunday's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference 70-64 result at Colorado College.

Trinity (20-1, 11-1 SCAC) and Colorado College (15-6, 11-1 SCAC) are tied atop the SCAC standings heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. The loss snaps Trinity's best winning streak to start a season (20 games), as well as a streak of 32 consecutive wins in league play, dating back to a pair of regular season losses to Colorado College in January of 2021.

The TU Tigers were unable to overcome a poor shooting night that included just 1-for-13 from three-point range, leading to an overall shooting game under 38%. Despite that, Trinity was able to rally from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit – cutting the lead to just four (59-55) with 1:45 to play. Colorado College hit 8-of-8 at the line over the final 95 seconds to clinch the win.

Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) led Trinity with 23 points off the bench, adding six rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots. Addie Putnam (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) chipped in with 12 points to go with a game-leading eight rebounds, combined with a team-best three steals.

Today marked the final road game left on the schedule for the Tigers, who will not only play host for the final two weekends of the regular season, but also for the 2023 SCAC Championship Tournament at the end of the month. Trinity will begin that home stand next weekend against the University of Dallas and Austin College on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively.

The Rundown
Trinity took a 7-3 lead in the opening moments of the game, but Colorado College snuck back in front 12-11 with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. That lead grew as high as five in the final minutes, but Trinity scored four of the final five points to cut it to an 18-16 deficit after one.

The best quarter of the day for Trinity came in the second, beginning with a quick bucket to tie the game in the opening minute. Trinity used a 10-0 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 28-21 less than four minutes into the period. Colorado College made a push late in the first half with an 8-3 run that cut Trinity's lead to just two (33-31) with just over a minute left. Trinity got a pair of free throws on its next possession and took a 35-31 advantage into the locker room.

The third quarter proved to be as damaging for Trinity as the second was helpful, as Colorado College held the visitors to just 10 points. Trinity got a pair of free throws to start the period and edge its way to a six-point lead, but Colorado College scored 11 unanswered to take a 42-37 lead with 3:19 left. Trinity was held to just one field goal in the third quarter and that came in the waning seconds to make it a 47-45 deficit heading into the final period.

Trinity's shooting woes continued in the early part of the fourth, as the TU Tigers were held scoreless for the first five minutes. Colorado College only scored eight points during that stretch, but still led by double figures (55-45) at the midway point. After Shipley finally got Trinity's first field goal, Colorado College answered with a three-point play to take its largest lead of the game at 11 points.

The lead was still 10 when Trinity made its final push with six straight points to make it a 59-55 game with 1:45 to play. Colorado College sank two foul shots on its next possession and Shipley drove to the basket to bring the lead back to four again with just over a minute left. Colorado College's Audrey Bayston then hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 45.3 seconds left to pull out to a 64-57 lead and deflate Trinity's chances at a comeback.
