No. 11 Men’s Tennis Takes Out No. 18 Sagehens to Finish Rain-Shortened Stag-Hen

The Tigers tallied all of the first four points in Sunday’s match, led-off by a ranked victory for Nguyen, Liao in line-one doubles

CLAREMONT, Calif. – No. 11 Trinity University Men's Tennis rebounded in Sunday's 2023 Stag-Hen Invitational finale with a 4-3 victory over co-host No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (CA).

The Tigers (6-3) swept the early session for the doubles point; a dominant display opened by a 6-2 line-one knockout from senior Hao Nguyen (Sugar Land, Texas / Strake Jesuit) and sophomore Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep [FL]) over the nation's eighth-ranked duo for the Sagehens.

A 6-3 mark from line-two juniors Rob Chang (Aeia, Hawaii / 'Iolani School) and Dalton Locke (Humble, Texas / Kingwood) clinched the NCAA I-style doubles point while senior Cal Hunter (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) and first-year Conor Kaczmarczyk (Aurora, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) finished off the doubles sweep with a 6-3 tally of their own.

The points kept coming for Trinity in singles as the match was clinched at 4-0. Chang and first-year Rafa Candelas Ruiz (Zacatecas, Mexico / American [ESP]) were the only two contests in singles to finish without tiebreaks as they logged 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3 victories in the sixth and fourth lines, respectively.

Liao seized momentum in line three on a first-set 8-6 breaker to post the lone shutout of the day, 6-0, for the clincher.

No. 11 Trinity Men's Tennis will bring home its new ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association—released Friday afternoon—into its fourth straight matchup of nationally ranked teams Thursday morning as defending NCAA III champion No. 6 University of Chicago pays a visit to the Butch Newman Tennis Center.
