SAN ANTONIO – The 10th-ranked Trinity baseball team clinched a weekend series win after earning a 7-1 victory over Concordia University (Wisc.) on Saturday night.
The Tigers improved to 7-4 this season with the win, which coupled with Friday evening's 7-5 win over the Falcons, assures Trinity a series victory as well. Trinity will go for the series sweep on Sunday, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Concordia fell to 0-2 this season with the loss.
Trinity scored twice in the bottom of the first to take the early lead and starting pitcher
Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C. / Hough) took a shutout into the seventh inning before making way for the bullpen. McGahan scattered four hits and just one walk over 6.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out a career-high nine batters.
Jack Martinez (Corpus Christi, Texas / Ray) finished off the final 2.1 innings without allowing a hit, as well as notching five strikeouts among the seven outs he recorded.
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) went 2-for-2 with two doubles in the game, scoring twice and driving in two more runs.
Cedric Bowman () also finished with a pair of hits and drove in a run.
The Rundown
Trinity started off the bottom of the first inning with three straight hits – the last of which was Lazzara's first double that brought in
Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) after his single to leadoff the game for the Tigers. After Concordia got a couple of outs,
Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas / Westlake) delivered a two-out single to score Lazzara for a 2-0 lead.
Lazzara's second double opened up the third inning for Trinity, then
Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) matched Lazzara with a double of his own. Harris then made it home on a two-base throwing error by the catcher to make it a 4-0 Tiger lead.
That was more than enough for McGahan, who struck out at least one batter in every inning he pitched except the first. He fanned two batters in the fifth and sixth to close out his final two full innings of work.
A walk and a groundout in the seventh put a runner at second for the first time in the game. Concordia then broke up the shutout with a single to right-center and McGahan came out of the game. Martinez came in and got his first strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Trinity loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and would eventually put the game out of reach with three runs on just one hit in the inning.
Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) walked with the bases full of Tigers to make it 5-1, then Bowman picked up an infield single for his RBI on the night.
Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) grounded out to first for the second out, but still drove in a run to account for the final scoring play of the game.
Concordia went 1-2-3 in the ninth to finish off the game, and Martinez struck out the final two batters looking to seal the Tiger win.
