No. 23 Trinity Baseball Drops Mid-Week Game at Concordia

AUSTIN – The 23rd-ranked Trinity baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 6-3 loss at Concordia University (Texas) on Tuesday night.

The Tigers fell to 19-10 with the loss, while the Tornados improve to 19-12 on the year. Trinity had won three of the previous four meetings in the series with Concordia, and the teams have now split 20 games played in Austin.

Four different Trinity players accounted for eight of the nine hits in the game, while Concordia hammered out 13 total hits. Brandon Nelson (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) also scored and drove in a run. Reliever Jack Briese (Danville, Ky. / Boyle County) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits over his two innings of work.

The Tigers resume their eight-game road trip this weekend, facing off against newly-ranked Southwestern University for a three-game series. The weekend begins with a single game Friday night, followed by a Saturday evening doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.

The Rundown
While Trinity stranded a couple of runners after getting a pair of two-out singles in the top of the first, Concordia took full advantage of a leadoff single to take a 1-0 lead in the game. The Tornados also put the first two batters on via singles in the second inning, but were held to just a single run to make it a 2-0 advantage after two innings.

The Tigers finally got on the board in the third as Peterson reached on a dropped fly ball, then scored on a throwing error. Ty Preston (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) singled to move Peterson to third and the throw home got away to make it 2-1.

Nelson and Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) got the fourth inning started for Trinity, then Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) bunted both runners into scoring position. After a walk loaded the bases, Peterson drove in Nelson with the tying run on a sac fly to right field.

The game wasn't tied for long as Concordia was back to scoring again in the bottom of the inning. The Tornados loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk to get things going. Concordia scored on a hit batter and a walk to take a 4-2 lead, but left the bases loaded.

The Tigers got a run back in the fifth as Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas / Westlake) singled with one out, then promptly stole second to move into scoring position. Nelson came through with an RBI single to make it 4-3. The Tornados loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but came up empty to keep it to a one-run game heading into the sixth.

Trinity was held scoreless for the next three innings and the Tiger pitching also kept Concordia off of the board until the eighth. In the eighth, the Tornados added a pair of insurance runs to take a 6-3 lead into the ninth inning.

Preston drew a leadoff walk for the Tigers in the ninth, but the hopes for a rally were dashed by a double play. Concordia then put the finishing touches on the win with a game-ending strikeout.

Up Next
Trinity will meet up with No. 24 Southwestern University for a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series in Georgetown, Texas. It will be a showdown between the top two teams in the SCAC standings this season, beginning Friday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m.
