No. 16/14 Men's Golf Second After the First Day at SCAC Championships

KERRVILLE, Texas – Trinity's No. 16/14 men's golf team is just one shot off of the lead after the first two rounds of action at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Schreiner University at the Riverhill Country Club.

The Tigers led by two strokes after the first round earlier in the day, shooting an impressive 289 score that is the best in conference history for a first-round team score in a 54-hole format. St. Thomas is leading the tournament after shooting a two-round total of 590, while host Schreiner is just two shots from the top spot in third. Southwestern University is in fourth, followed by the University of Dallas in fifth, Texas Lutheran University in sixth, and Centenary College in seventh.

Daniel Nunez (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola) broke the SCAC Championships record after shooting a 64 in today's first round, edging out the previous record by a single shot. Nunez had just a single bogey in his record-breaking round, carding seven birdies and an eagle. His front nine score of 30 featured a four-hole stretch during which he had three birdies and an eagle. Nunez leads the tournament with a two-round total of 140, which is five shots better than the next best individual score.

Carter Code (Calgary, Alberta, Canada / Manning) is tied for third individually after shooting a 146 (71-75) on Monday. Code shot one-under 71 in the first round with three birdies, then added another birdie on his way to a score of 75 that matched the best of the round for the Tigers.

Jacob Mason (Westminster, Colo. / Holy Family) is tied for ninth just three shots behind Code with a score of 149 (74-75). Mason had seven total birdies over the two rounds and played the front nine of round two at one-under.

Jack McKay (Spring, Texas / Klein Oak) improved four shots from round one to round two, finishing in a tie for 21st with his score of 156 (80-76). McKay finished the back nine of round one with just a single bogey among eight pars, then carried that momentum into round two. He shot one-over again on the front nine that was aided by a pair of birdies.

Giorgio Gianoulis (Salt Lake City, Utah / Rowland Hall) and Aiden Marlow (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) rounded out Trinity's six golfers at the event. Gianoulis had the best improvement in the second round, shaving six strokes off of his first-round score to finish with a 162 (84-78). Marlow was four shots behind his teammate at 166 (84-82).

The teams will play a single round tomorrow to decide the SCAC Champion, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. The Tigers are hoping for their second title in three years after winning the conference crown in 2021.
