GEORGETOWN, Texas – Trinity's eighth-ranked and second-seeded men's tennis team advanced to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Match with a 5-0 win over third-seed Colorado College in the SCAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday morning.
The Tigers are now 15-6 this season after the victory, which puts them in position to play for the program's 13th consecutive SCAC Championship on Sunday. Trinity is also 10-0 in the series against the CC Tigers (since 2010), which now includes five wins in SCAC Tournament play. Colorado College ends its season with an 8-12 record.
Doubles began with the line two team of
Alessio Azzalini (Rome, Italy / Istituto Paritario G. Visconti) and
Rafa Candelas Ruiz (Zacatecas, Mexico / American School (Spain)) taking an 8-1 win to get Trinity on the board, followed by identical 8-4 victories by the line three doubles team of
Rob Chang (Aiea, Hawaii / 'Iolani School) and
Dalton Locke (Humble, Texas / Kingwood) and the line one team of
Hao Nguyen (Sugar Land, Texas / Strake Jesuit) and
Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep (Fla.)).
Leading 3-0 heading into singles, Trinity remained well in control by winning the first set in five of the six matches on the courts. Candelas Ruiz took the first victory at 6-1, 6-4 on line five, then Liao won 6-2, 6-2 at line three to clinch the TU Tiger victory.
Candelas Ruiz won the clincher in yesterday's win over Austin College, and he is the only Trinity player who has been able to finish both of his matches so far at this weekend's SCAC Tournament. Those victories also put him at 13-6 this season in dual matches, having won three straight singles contests.
Trinity will play the winner of today's other SCAC Semifinal between hosting Southwestern University and the University of St. Thomas at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. The Tigers have won 12 straight SCAC Tournament Championships and have faced off against the Pirates in seven straight SCAC Championship Finals. Trinity will also be seeking its 27th overall conference title.
