GEORGETOWN, Texas – Trinity's 16th-ranked women's tennis team began its part in the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-0 shutout win over the University of St. Thomas on Saturday evening, advancing to tomorrow's tournament championship.
The Tigers notched their seventh straight win and improved to 15-4 this season. St. Thomas advanced to the SCAC Semifinals with a 5-3 win over Schreiner University yesterday, but ends its season at 5-7 with today's loss.
Trinity got off to a quick start as
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) and
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) won 8-1 at line three for the first point, followed closely by
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) winning at line two by the same score.
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 top-line victory.
All six of the Tiger singles players won the opening set to keep the momentum going, but it was Hughes who finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at line five.
Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Albuquerque Academy) clinched the match for Trinity at line six, matching the 6-0, 6-0 win by her teammate.

Trinity will take on 20th-ranked Southwestern in the SCAC Tournament Championship Match tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. This marks the seventh straight time that the Tigers and Pirates will meet in the SCAC Final, with Trinity winning five of the previous six. Trinity has actually won nine of the last 10 SCAC Championships, with Southwestern's 5-4 win in 2021 being the only interruption in that streak.
