NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Tiger men's golf team is 14th following the second round of play at the NCAA III Championships on Wednesday, finishing above the cut line and advancing to play the final 36 holes over the next two days.
Trinity shot 299 as a team in the second round, which kept them five shots above the cut that was set for the top 18 teams. Methodist University and Piedmont University are tied for the lead after round two as both teams have a combined two-day score of 573. The Tigers have a score of 589 after the second day, which is just eight shots from a spot in the top 10.
Wednesday was also Folds of Honor Day at the NCAA Championships, which meant that each team was playing in honor of a fallen soldier during today's round. Signs were located at each tee box and American pin flags were flown at various holes throughout the course. Trinity played today in honor of Army Captain Dale A. Goetz, who died August 30, 2010.
Daniel Nunez (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola) and
Jacob Mason (Westminster, Colo. / Holy Family) are both tied for 25th individually with two-day totals of 145 for the tournament. That total leaves the pair just five shots from the No. 1 individual. Nunez finished with five birdies in today's round and is tied for the team lead with eight over the first 36 holes. He played the final 11 holes at -2 and wound up with a score of 74 on Wednesday. Mason shot a second-round 73 (+1) and had just two birdies. He played the back nine one-under-par and got as low as -2 during his round.
Carter Code (Calgary, Alberta, Canada / Manning) is tied with Nunez for the team lead with eight birdies, though Code also had an eagle yesterday. Code shot a 76 in today's round after catching two birdies to close out the day, and he has a two-round total of 148.
Neel Sandhu (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) has a 151 (75-76) total for the first two days, and
Giorgio Gianoulis (Salt Lake City, Utah / Rowland Hall) has scored 163 (77-86) to start the week.
Trinity will begin on the 10th hole on Thursday at 8:50 a.m., and will be playing with Willamette University and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent University of St. Thomas.
