#15 Trinity Men's Soccer Settles for Home Draw With HSU

Story Links

SAN ANTONIO – The 15th-ranked Trinity men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw with Hardin-Simmons University on Friday night.

The Tigers (4-0-1) and Cowboys (0-2-2) tied for the second straight meeting as the teams finished in a 1-1 deadlock last year in Abilene, Texas. Trinity is 7-2-1 against HSU over the last 10 meetings, though, dating back to the 2012 season.

The teams were locked in a scoreless tie at the half, thanks to a penalty-kick save by Trinity goalkeeper Austin Wilman (Esher, England / Charterhouse School). As the final seconds of the first half ticked off the clock, Trinity committed a handball foul in the box to set Hardin-Simmons up with a penalty. With just eight seconds remaining until halftime, Wilman made the diving save, then the Cowboys also missed wide right on a follow-up shot and the game remained a 0-0 tie.

After halftime, both teams were determined to get on the scoreboard and did so with four goals in the final 45 minutes. The scoring started as Hardin-Simmons drew another penalty in the 56th minute of play. Wilman nearly made another save to keep the game level, but the ball went off his hands and into the net for a 1-0 HSU lead.

Now down a goal, Trinity pushed forward even harder in an attempt to pull back even. Just over 15 minutes later, the Tigers did just that on a goal by Hunter Cain (Katy, Texas / Cinco Ranch) in the 71st minute. Will Powell (Bexley, England / Beth Grammar School) provided the assist on the game-tying goal, crossing the ball to the top of the six-yard box after a nice hesitation move to get clear of his defender. After the pass cleared two other Tiger players, Cain was there to finish off the play.

The Tigers continued pressing for even more and found another goal less than four minutes later. Powell got things started again with an entry pass to Michael Meese (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) just outside the six-yard box. Meese's shot was denied by the HSU defense, then a failed clearance put the ball at the feet of Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs). He powered the bouncing ball into the back of the net to put Trinity up 2-1.

As the clock slipped just under five minutes to play, the Cowboys were able to break away for another score to bring the game back to even. Trinity had a corner kick less than a minute later that led to an on-target shot, then had another shot on goal with 2:29 left, but HSU was able to escape with the draw.

Trinity will be back at home on Monday to take on NCAA I University of the Incarnate Word at 7:00 p.m.
