No. 6 Tiger Football Gets Set For Week Four SAA Matchup; Huettel Earns D3football.com Team of the Week

No. 6 Tiger (2-1) Football continues Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a game against Rhodes College Lynx at Tiger Stadium for a 4:00 PM kickoff.

The Tigers bring their SAA winning streak to 16 games, dating back to 2021. The Tigers pounced on the Panthers, claiming victory by a score of 38-3. The Tigers remain perfect against the Panthers, bringing the overall record to 13-0. The Tigers had a great game on the ground, collecting 134 yards. With a good ground game, it sets up more options through the air, and the Tigers took advantage of that. The Tigers had 319 yards through the air. Junior kicker Tyler Huettel (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

D3football.com Rankings

The Tigers remain in the number 6 spot on the D3football.com rankings after their win on Saturday. The top seven teams remain the same, with North Central (Ill.) and Mount Union still occupying the top two positions. Region rival Hardin-Simmons remains right above the Tigers at the number 5 spot.

D3football.com Team of the Week - Tyler Huettel

After another great performance against Birmingham-Southern, kicker Tyler Huettel was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Huettel went 5-for-5 on extra points and hit a career-long 50-yard field goal to help lift the Tigers to a 38-3 road win over Birmingham-Southern. He is the second person in school history to connect on a 50-yard field goal, and the first Tiger player to do so since the 1974 season.

Preview: No. 6 Trinity vs Rhodes

It's another battle of the cats this week as the Tigers take on the Lynx. The two teams first met in 1983, with the Tigers taking the victory 14-10. Since then, the Tigers hold a 23-12 record against the Lynx, winning the last 13 matchups. During the 2022 matchup, the Tigers shut out the Lynx and claimed victory by a score of 45-0. The Lynx bring a 2-1 record to San Antonio after dropping a 28-26 thriller to Centre College in triple overtime.

Offense: The Tiger offense scored 30-plus points for the third game in a row this week. With the four-headed monster at running back, the ground game was excellent for the Tigers. Senior Legend Grigsby (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) led the way with 49 yards and added two touchdowns to his ledger. All-American quarterback Tucker Horn (Graham, Texas / Graham) had another excellent game, passing for 278 yards and a touchdown. Fifth-year receiver Ryan Merrifield (Austin, Texas / Vandergrift) had an amazing game, collecting 7 receptions for 127 yards. Cole Monago (Houston, Texas / Klein Cain) added another touchdown on his season, his third in just as many games. The Lynx started off the season hot, putting up 47 points. Since then, they have put up 19 and 26-point games, respectively. The Lynx will look to young quarterback Houston Wilhelm to lead the offense.

Defense: The Tiger defense only let in three points in the previous game against Birmingham-Southern. Sophomore Trey Green (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) led the team with five total tackles and Mac Douglas (Fairhope, Alabama / Bayside Academy) was a monster on the line, grabbing three quarterback hurries. The Lynx defense has been solid this year, only allowing 45 points on the young season. The Tiger offensive line will have their hands full with junior defensive lineman Thomas Conroy. Conroy leads the team with 19 total tackles and 3 sacks.

Special Teams: The Tiger special teams put on another great performance on Saturday. Returner BJ Stewart (Shreveport, Louisiana / Woodlawn) gained a total of 79 yards total on all his returns. Kicker Tyler Huettel remained perfect on PATs going 5-5, and notched a booming 50-yard field goal for the Tigers. Punter Eli Gehman (Cedar Park, Texas / Leander) showed off his leg by averaging 42.8 yards a punt and placing one inside the 20-yard line. The Lynx punting group has been great this season, putting 6 of 12 punts inside the 20-yard. The Tiger returners will get a shot to put the team in great field position, as the Lynx kickers have only had one touchback all season.

Looking Ahead: Berry Big Game

The Tigers will take another road trip to Mount Berry, Georgia to compete against Berry College on Saturday, September 30th with a 1:00 PM (ET) kickoff.
