SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity University football team won 38-35 in overtime in a Saturday afternoon Southern Athletic Association game against Berry College (GA). Trinity has now won four straight meetings between the two teams and has a 5-3 overall record in the series.
Tyler Huettel (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) kicked a 33-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Tigers to the win, which put both teams into identical 5-2 overall records and 3-1 conference records.
Anthony Njoku (Richmond, Texas / Travis) secured the Tiger defense's fifth turnover of the day when he intercepted a pass from Berry to start the overtime, which set up Huettel's game-winner.
Ryan Back (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, then also ran in from inside the one yard line for another score. He has thrown for 250 yards or more in three straight games.
Tyson Hancock (Smithville, Texas / Smithville) and
Will Taylor (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) were the top receiving targets on the day, catching four passes each. Hancock finished with 112 yards receiving that included a 75-yard touchdown.
BJ Rainey (Cedar Hill, Texas / Cedar Hill) and
Foster Malloy (Dallas, Texas / Parish Episcopal School) also caught touchdowns in the game.
Legend Grigsby (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) led Trinity with 68 yards rushing on nine carries, pacing a rushing attack that finished with 152 yards on the ground.
Cade Rabson (The Woodlands, Texas / College Park) finished with a career-high 14 tackles to lead Trinity's defense, while
Lukas Morin (Round Rock, Texas / Stony Point) not only had a career-best nine tackles, but he also recorded two interceptions in the game – the first of his career.
Wakil Mateen (San Antonio, Texas / Brennan) and
Ryan Ventura (Southlake, Texas / Keller) both had sacks that resulted in fumbles, and Ventura recovered the fumble he caused for a touchdown.
James Ogunrin (Katy, Texas / Episcopal) finished with seven tackles.
Trinity will continue SAA play next weekend, facing off against Hendrix College (AR) at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, in Conway, Arkansas.
