Trinity Football Has 20 Players Earn All-SAA Honors

CANTON, Ga. – The Trinity University football team had 20 players earn All-Southern Athletic Association honors for the 2024 season, led by senior kicker Tyler Huettel (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) winning his second straight Special Teams Player of the Year award.

The Tigers finished the regular season with an 8-2 overall record and a 6-1 SAA record that was tied for the top mark in the conference and secured a share of this year's SAA Championship. This is Trinity's fifth overall conference title and its fourth consecutive. Trinity earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Playoffs, which starts this weekend.

Huettel's honor is the fifth time in the past eight seasons that the Tigers have won the award. He is the third Trinity player to win the award and the second to have won it multiple times. He was named to the All-SAA 1st Team for the second time in his career, and he is both a two-time All-Region performer and a two-time All-American. This year, Huettel has kicked 17 field goals to tie the school record for a single season and he has connected on 36-of-36 extra-point attempts for a team-leading total of 87 points scored.

Trinity had five players voted to the All-SAA 1st Team, including Huettel. The offensive players joining Huettel on the 1st Team are fifth-year lineman John Hughes (Cypress, Texas / Bridgeland) and junior lineman Caleb Bayer (Grandview, Texas / Grandview). On defense, fifth-year linebacker Cade Rabson (The Woodlands, Texas / College Park) and senior lineman Jonathan Nwobodo (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point). Hughes and Bayer have both earned All-SAA honors three times in their careers, and both have also earned All-Region honors from D3football.com. This is the first All-SAA honor for both Rabson and Nwobodo. Rabson led Trinity with 109 tackles this season, including 12.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Nwobodo edged out his teammate for the team lead with 13.0 tackles for loss and notched a team-best 7.0 sacks on the year.

There were six Tigers selected for the All-SAA 2nd Team – three on offense and three on defense. Fifth-year linebacker James Ogunrin (Katy, Texas / Episcopal) was honored as an All-SAA player for the fifth time in his career, while junior offensive lineman Conner Keele (Lampasas, Texas / Lampasas) makes his second straight appearance on the 2nd Team and his third overall All-SAA honor. Fifth-year running back Legend Grigsby (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) earned his spot on the All-SAA team for the second straight season, with senior defensive lineman Max Shilstone (Houston, Texas / Lamar), senior wide receiver BJ Rainey (Cedar Hill, Texas / Cedar Hill), and sophomore defensive back Delvin Gantt (Burton, Texas / Burton) all picking up their first All-SAA awards.

There were nine Trinity players that earned All-SAA Honorable Mention status for this season. Fifth-year running back Winston Hutchison (Round Rock, Texas / McNeil) received All-SAA recognition for the third time in his career and was the only repeat selection this year. Also earning the offensive honors this year are fifth-year tight end Alex Thiel (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown), senior quarterback Ryan Back (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift), junior wide receiver Will Taylor (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit), and sophomore wide receiver Alejandro Tavarez (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson). Defensively, the list included junior defensive back Lukas Morin (Round Rock, Texas / Stony Point), sophomore defensive back Anthony Njoku (Richmond, Texas / Travis), sophomore defensive lineman Steele Herndon (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands), and first-year defensive back Ryan Ventura (Southlake, Texas / Keller).

Trinity is led by Head Coach Jerheme Urban, who is in his 11th season at the helm of the program. He has led the Tigers to four straight SAA Championships and four straight appearances in the NCAA Playoffs. Trinity will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) in the NCAA 1st Round on Saturday, November 23, at 12:00 p.m. Tickets can only be purchased at the stadium and the gates will open at 10:00 a.m.
