Tiger Women's Hoops Advances To SCAC Final With Victory Over Schreiner

SHREVEPORT - Trinity Women's Hoops advances to the championship round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships with a 64-54 win over Schreiner.

The Tigers (21-5) were resilient all afternoon. Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) was insane for the Tigers with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Oregon / Valley Catholic) also had an excellent line. Napoli collected 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Although Trinity lacked the offensive prowess that they normally have, they made up for it with stellar defense. The Tigers held Schreiner to 32 percent shooting, forced 23 turnovers and had 17 total steals. The Tigers will compete in the finals of the SCAC Championships for the 12th straight year.

The Rundown

It took almost two minutes for either team to see any offense but Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) got the afternoon started with a quick lay. Schreiner responded the next possession and the crowd got an early taste of the story of the first half. Schreiner made some tough buckets early but Napoli hit a deep three from the wing to take the lead. Again, the Mountaineers responded with a three of their own and were the first team to hit double-digits. Schreiner went on an 11-5 swing to close the half and take a 21-13 lead into the second quarter.

Early in the second, the Mountaineers hit a three to go up by eleven and then another to grow their lead to 13. Nevertheless, it was time for the offense to heat up. Boom, Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) hits a three and then Napoli follows her up with two more and suddenly the lead is cut to five. Robbins found the bottom of the rim late and the Tigers went into the half down 28-32.

Head Coach Cameron Hill must've shown the team a John Stockton highlight tape because the Tigers came out of the half with precision passing. Robbins would rip a pass to find Elaine King (Cedar Park, Texas / Cedar Park) for the early bucket. Midway through the quarter, Robbins and King would find the rim again for Trinity to regain the lead. From then on, it was all Tigers. Freshman Jamie Ruede (Pipe Creek, Texas / Boerne) found Robbins off a skip pass and Robbins knocked it down. Maggie loves her teammates so she returned the favor and found Ruede who would splash a three from the corner. The Tigers grew the lead and went into the fourth up 46-39.

With more pristine ball movement, Napoli found Minter for a triple and the Tigers were now up by 10. The game would get chippy in the fourth with some hard defense being played by both teams. The Mountaineers tried to get offense going but the Trinity defense was elite. Schreiner started the intentional with a minute left, but TU would sink 6-8 free throws to ice the game and move on to the championship round.

Coach Speak

"The Town. Great movie about a crew of bank robbers who grew up together in Charlestown, Massachusetts," said Coach Hill. "Being a member of a unit like that, loyalty is a non-negotiable. Like when Dougie asks James for a pretty serious favor, and James looks right back at home and simply says "Who's car we gonna take?" No hesitation. That's what it's like coaching this team. No matter what happens we feel connected in the moment. Same will be true tomorrow, and we're taking Daryl's car. ONWARD!!!"
