SAN ANTONIO – The 17th-ranked Trinity baseball team finished off the weekend with a 6-1 win over the University of Texas-Dallas on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers improved to 9-3 this season, winning both games against the Comets this weekend. UT-Dallas falls to 11-5 with today's loss, but did split the weekend by winning twice against Centenary College on Friday and Saturday.
Trinity picked up single runs in the first and fourth innings, then blew the game open with a four-run sixth to take a 6-0 lead at the time. UT-Dallas broke up the shutout with a run in the seventh, but the Tiger pitchers limited the visitors to just one run on four hits.
Starting pitcher
Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) got the win to improve to 3-0 this season, tossing 5.1 shutout innings during which he allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters. Relievers
Sheppard Tyler (Austin, Texas / Anderson) and
Jack Briese (Danville, Ky. / Boyle County) gave up just one run on two hits the rest of the way, adding three strikeouts each.
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) went 3-for-4 to account for nearly half of Trinity's seven hits in the game.
Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) and
Alex Monson (Houston, Texas / Memorial) both belted homers to boost the offense, with Monson dealing the biggest blow with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Max Milligan (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) led off the bottom of the sixth with a single for the Tigers, scoring on a single by
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) that followed a sacrifice bunt. Harris led off the fourth with a solo homer to make it a 2-0 Tiger lead, but Trinity missed a chance at a big inning after leaving the bases loaded.
Jack Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) drew a leadoff walk to start the home half of the sixth, then scored on a single up the middle by Holloway. Monson fell behind 0-2 to start his at-bat, then fouled off two more pitches as he worked the count to 2-2. The launched the next pitch over the wall in right to give Trinity its 6-0 lead.
UT-Dallas got its first run of the game with a ground-rule double in the seventh, but Tyler struck out the next two hitters to limit the damage. The Comets got a single and drew a walk with one out in the eighth in another bid to cut into the lead, but Briese came in and slammed the door with back-to-back strikeouts. Briese finished with a 1-2-3 ninth that included a game-ending strikeout.
