Tiger Softball Drops Doubleheader To UMHB

SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Softball drops their midweek doubleheader against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Tigers (11-7) lost game one by a score of 0-8 and then dropped game two 2-1. Cameron Bishop (Austin, Texas / Stephen F. Austin) put in a solid pitching performance, going four and one-third innings and only allowing one earned run. Megan Kriechbaum (Cedar Hills, Utah / Pleasant Grove) followed her up with two and two-thirds shutout innings in relief. Peyton Bowser (Arvada, Colorado / West) put up a good line at the plate, going 2-4 (.500) with two singles. Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura) broke Trinity's single-season record for walks drawn in a season (20).

Game One - Trinity 0, UMHB 8

The first inning was shaky for the Tigers as UMHB put up two runs early in the top of the first and the Tigers were sat down in order. After the Crusaders scored another in the second, the Trinity bats looked to respond. Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, California / Thousand Oaks) showed off her wheels with a bunt single and then would go on to steal second but would be picked off in the next at bat. With a Tiger reaching on a catcher's interference, Bowser would squeak one through the right side and the Tigers would be threatening. Sydney Watson (San Antonio, Texas / San Antonio Christian) would rope a ball through the 5-6 hole but the UMHB right fielder made a heads up play to throw out a Tiger runner at third and Trinity would leave them stranded in the second.

UMHB scored some more and the Tigers posed their biggest threat in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jordyn Williams (Clayton, California / Clayton Valley Charter) smashed a ball to right and Bowser followed that up with a single up the middle. Leah Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas / East Central) put pressure on the Crusader defense, forcing an arid through and the Tigers loaded the bases. Unfortunately, the Tigers would leave the runners where they were. The Tigers failed to score in the fifth as well and the game would end 0-8.

Game Two - Tigers 1, UMHB 2

This defensive battle started off with the Tigers putting together a double play in the top of the first. Both teams went three up three down for three straight innings. UMHB broke the stalemate with an RBI single in the fourth. The Tigers would be sat down in order and the Crusaders would score again in the fifth. Kreichbaum would enter the bases loaded jam in the fifth and get out of it thanks to the help of heads up plays by shortstop Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom).

It was more of a defensive showcase for the next two innings until the Tigers came up in the bottom of the seventh. Tagawa walked to break up the perfect game. The Tigers found themselves with two outs and a runner on first via the fielder's choice. Coach Wittenauer then subbed in pinch runner Ella Whitacre (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson) and pinch hitter Sydney Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek). Boudreaux hit a soft liner over the head of the first baseman that would take an obscure bounce to allow Whitacre to wheel around the bases to put up a run for the home team. That would be the only run the Tigers would score, however, as the defensive battle would end in a 1-2 loss.
