SAN ANTONIO – The 14th-ranked Trinity men's tennis team began its Spring Break Week at home with an 8-1 loss to #8 University of Chicago on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers fell to 3-6 this season, while the Maroons improved to 9-1 with the win. Chicago swept the doubles matches and nearly swept singles before Trinity pulled out a win in the final match on the court to avoid the shutout.
Four of the six singles matches went to a third set, though the match was clinched by that time.
Connor Whittington (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) won his opening set at line two singles, but lost the second to move to a super tiebreaker and eventually lost the match.
Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) was beaten 10-7 in the super tiebreaker after also winning his first set at line six.
Rafa Candelas (Zacatecas, Mexico / American School) made it three straight losses in the super tiebreaker for the Tigers, falling 10-6.
Aashish Dhanani (Austin, Texas / Westwood) broke that streak and avoided the shutout with his 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win at line five. Dhanani and
Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep) had one of the closer doubles matches to start the day, falling 8-5 at line one.
